These tracks were up and down a small stream i was trapping before the snow and cold hit about a week or so ago. If these are mink tracks i want to get a few sets out this weekend and see what i can do before the season closes.

What are my best options with the snow? Box cubbies w/ a conibear, Pocket, crossing log set?

Some suggestions would be great.

Sprytle,

These definitely are mink tracks!

Normally you can identify whether it is a male or a female mink based on the size of the print and distance between prints, when they are lopping along. Especially if the tracks are in the snow.

I agree, definetely mink.

In respect to sets, you didnt give a "wide view" so its hard to really suggest anything specific. But, since you have a sandy "beach" I would look for a spot where the beach narrows down...with a high bank or tree on one side and the water on the other. Put a well-blended 110 in that pinch point. Remember to elevate the jaws up off the wet sand or they may freeze down.

Good luck! ;)

Sprytle,

Sorry, I didn't give you any set ideas.

I have always leaned toward pocket set and blind sets for mink.

Since you have a good location with fresh tracks, just poke around a little and find the spot where the mink is forced into the water, as he travels long the edge of the bank. Place your trap where he jumps into the water.

I would also make a pocket set into the bank at a location where you have deep enough water to provide for effective drowning.

I prefer using the 1.5 coilspring for both of these sets.

Good Luck!
