Went to the beach today to think about soe other issues in my life. As I was staring out over the water I began thinking about fishing.

Right now is there anything close to shore that I can tangle with? I have waders and gear, but just need to know if it is worth wading out into that cold water and tossing a spawn sack or minny.
Are the steelies or browns in close right now?

Browns will favor any part of the shoreline with some river water mixed in. Preferabbly a NW, W, SW wind if you live on the west side. Steelies hang near river mouths on the side where the wind is blowing the river water. They want a degree or 2 in water temp and more oxygen. If your thinking about fishing any beach today your nuts. It must be 0 right now with the windsheild where I'm at.

I catch steelhead off beach in middle of nowhere, no river water. What this mean? I also catch steelhead on bright calm day with east wind, again in middle of nowhere, no river water, no difference in water temps. What this mean?

I think what it meens are that the fish are just crusing the shallows looking for bait or other types of food. They are usualy found inbetween sandbars in the troughs though.

If the water temp is right, I think the steelhead will just roam but won't be in areas wheres theres no food. Like the East side of MI, port sanilac and lexington see steelhead but they dont hang around for long. Whenever theres bait present, steelhead and browns should be in the vicinity. But once the baitfish are gone, the steelhead and browns shouldn't be there either. The fish should have followed the bait somewheres else. Actually, I prefer fishing the beach on sunny calm days than on the pier. But, there still needs to be river water in with the lake water. I detect bites better and seem to catch more fish. On days with a very strong wind that is pushing river water around pier heads, I fish the piers and stay all day. Oct-Nov months are awesome. You can catch steel at dark. But once December rolls around and winter begins, the fish seem to bite better after the sun is up shineing, or when its calm, or if there is a rise in temps.

yes, a flow of water dumping into the lake can definitely help but as the master silversides said, it really isnt necessary. We have caught a fair amount of fish from random sections of beaches. I do think having defined sandbars and troughs in an area is important though because it funnels the fish as they cruise along the shoreline.

if there is open water, go for it. Dont let the "windsheild" scare you:lol:

Yep, you'll get fish where you wouldn't think you would right now. But its still a good idea to be down wind from the nearest mouth. Let the current run down in that direction and you may have just a little more luck.
