Michigan Bovine TB Eradication Project press release 4/17/02

Oscoda County to be designated as High Risk Area
by Michigan Department of Agriculture

State and federal officials today announced that a small Oscoda County beef herd tested positive for bovine Tuberculosis (TB). This is the 20th herd to be confirmed as bovine TB affected – all of which have been located in Northeast Michigan.

Any time bovine TB is identified in livestock, the state’s eradication protocol calls for the director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture to designate the county where the herd is located as high risk, which sets into motion an annual testing regimen for at least a three-year period.

“As always, MDA will work closely with the county’s livestock producers to get the required testing done in as easy, effective and efficient manner as possible,” said Bob Bender, Michigan’s Bovine TB Eradication Coordinator.

There are approximately 19 dairy and 109 beef farms in Oscoda County. Herd owners may contact the MDA Atlanta office toll-free at 888/565-8626 or their private veterinary practitioner to arrange whole herd tests. State-required TB tests are free of charge, provided that the practitioner is certified by and contracted with MDA.

Earlier this year, MDA established three TB eradication zones: the Infected Zone, the Surveillance Zone, and the Disease Free Zone. Adding Oscoda County as a high risk area does not change these designations.

The Infected Zone includes Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency and Presque Isle counties; the Surveillance Zone includes Crawford, Cheboygan, Iosco, Ogemaw, Oscoda and Otsego counties; while the remaining counties in the state are each part of the disease free zone. Specific testing, movement, permit and identification requirements for these zones can be viewed online at www.bovinetb.com.

Since the TB Eradication effort began, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has tested over 88,000 wild white-tailed deer, with 395 testing positive for bovine TB. Two elk and 30 carnivores/omnivores have also tested positive. MDA has tested more than 760,000 cattle, bison and goats.

"Oscoda County to be designated as High Risk Area"
and
"the Surveillance Zone includes Crawford, Cheboygan, Iosco, Ogemaw, Oscoda and Otsego counties"

So Oscoda is a high risk area but is still only under serveillance? It seems to me it should be classified as Infected. Just wondering, thanks Jean, I appreciate all you do for these forums.
