I used to ice fish on the river years ago. With the lower water levels what is it like these days? And where can you access the river?

Last year I iced fished alot on the kawkawlin river. i would go on the oppsite side of the bridge away from castaways. In fact last year i did great i went 3 times and everytime was sucessfull for fishing for perch i would fish only 3 or 4 hours and catch alot of small perch and walleye but usually after sorting i would go home with 15 to 20 perch all 8 to 10 inches nothing really over 10 but nice and fat. I even caught 2 keeper walleyes and a gazillion small ones during those three outings and you'll get a pike here and there also. Really a fun place to go and fish for i would always be busy with fish. hope i helped!

I fish the Kawkawlin river a few times a year, since it is close to where I live. It can be good at times, but has been hit or miss for me. A couple years back, I was catching some nice perch and this big *** nothern comes out of nowhere and just about ripped the rod out of my hand. Lost him and my hook, and the perch obviously went away. The water was clear on that trip and you could just about see bottom. Access is not real good, I was getting on just upstream from Castaway's bar, I don't know if they let you park there any more. I have not gone this year yet, (on the ice) just waiting for the ice to get better and a day off to go.

I'm not sure about the race track thing, but on Monday (1/22) there were so many permanent shanties stacked end-to-end upstream from the Castaway's Bar, that they almost block off the river. :D

I'm going to roll to franks on Fri morning to get some bait for Sat. so I will stop by there and spud a hole and see what is going on. It will be a reace track on the weekends for sure - I might even hit that action.

I used to live in the condos across from castaways. If you past the condos and take a right there is an acess road that anyone can use. Most people then go park at castaways for the day. good luck:coolgleam

three dudes put a stolen blazer through the ice yesterday/early this morning. I guess it sunk right to the bottom.

Thanks for the info everyone.

I may have to get out there one of these days, although with the reports coming from the Sag, it is gonna be tough.

I know one of the guys really well. The ironic thing is I invited him to go fishing on the Sag River this weekend and he said he didn't want to because he didn't trust the ice. :dizzy:
