What are the conditions like at Wickes Park? I want to head up to the river soon. The weather for the next 10-15 days looks promising, lots of teens and single digits at night. I live about 45 min. away so I don't want to take the trip until I'm pretty sure the ice is good.

This past Monday, I drove along the Saginaw River (on M-13) from the "Z" bridge, North to Bay City. The river through that stretch was iced over, but had pockets of open water every 1/4 - 1/2 mile or so. There was actually a guy fishing in a rowboat one of these open water pockets near Melbourne Road. Now that's a diehard!

Below the bridge (from what I could see from I-75), was completely iced over. Hopefully Wicks Park will have some good ice soon!

Caught 49 tonight and lost a 10 lb fish, the rest were 13 inchers. The ice is 4-7 inches and a few spots 3 in the middle. It is time for some ice fishing!!!

Hey buck are you talking about "hog alley" across from the compost pile? I went there this morning to check the ice and i turned around after putting my spud through about mabye 3 inches and i was only out 20-30 feet off shore. I was by myself otherwise I would have went further. That area seemed to look better ice wise then the area north of the bridge with open water. I might try to go back there tomorrow afternoon and fish if there is someone else that might be there just for safety reasons. That area in there is usually hit and miss. I did catch my biggest river walleye there 6 years ago but havent really done too good since then there. If someone wants to go try there let me know and I'll meet you there. Better to be safe then sorry. Good Luck to all and great site. Jeff

Some spots were 3-4 inches but mostly 4-6 everywhere it looked ok, there was a lot less ice 2 days ago!!! This weekend should have a lot of thick ice.

Thanks for the info and report. I'll be on the river sometime this coming week. I like to wait for a storm or a low pressure system to move through and be on the ice fishing when it hits. I've had some amazing days on that river in bad weather. Heck,I've had some amazing days there period, including my biggest walleye at just over 29" and 9lbs. I hope the bigger fish turn on soon. The last couple years that I fished the river I caught litterally hundreds of those little dinks(8"-14 3/4"). It's better than not catching anything I guess, keeps your confidence up.

me and my buddy went on the river in wickes park today. we were across from the boat launch and about 20 foot off shore. we were in 10 foot of water and not one bite.. i tried to get on the ice in a few other spots and broke through the ice in like 2" water. the middle of the river was chunks of ice jammed up then frozen shut. didnt wanna die trying to get out there.. doubt if we'll be fishing that anytime soon:sad:

Fished yesterday at First Street only one little one then in the afternoon went north of the Z-bridge and only got one little one. Fish really shut off Friday. Went down to the Bean factory tonight and caught four little ones and lost a keeper at the hole. Fishing is not so good, current is still strong but there is pretty good ice. Hopefully the winds will die down to allow some ice to stay on the west side. Going to try the east side tomorrow.
