Came up river rd. to bay city sunday afternoon, and saw about 20 people on river north of z bridge. 2 spots, first big parking spot north of bridge, and 2nd was by cheboygan creek inlet. People were near channel at first spot, and by creek a couple were in shipping channel with open water upstream and downstream of them:yikes: Could not believe it. Don't know if posting this would cause anyone to go there, but I can't believe there's more than a inch or 2 and not worth it. Just reporting what I saw, but would advise not to go out there yet.

Those guys are IDIOTS! I took the same drive on my way down to Saginaw and couldnt believe it. They are risking thier lives right now. Some spots dont even have an inch of ice, some have 2-3 inches and current is moving at a decent rate. By Friday the whole river should be frozen over and because of colder temps-fairly safe.

There is still open water is downtown Saginaw between the bridges. Current must be kickin' there or they put way to much salt on the bridges:dizzy:
Way to early to be on the river IMO.

I was one of those so-called idiots on the ice yesterday. If you use a little commone sense when venturing out on 4" of solid ice you should not be considered an idiot. Yes, there is open water and poor ice out there, but indeed there is safe ice as well or we would have not gone.

I seen a few people out by the Bridge this morning, it is on the crazy side. I remember one year we were fishing on the river pretty close to that spot and when we got there we had around 6" of ice and about 1 hour later some dude broke through with one of his legs 15 feet from us he pulled himself out. I went out of the shanty and we were down to 2" of ice. I never packed up so fast before. The river is a risky any time there is ice.

P.S. Joe - Does your sister have a Myspace page?

twice i have gone thru with one leg. got lucky and kept moving. saw a guy go thru 70 yards in front of me. i couldn't get to him . I was afraid to go any farther. luckily he popped right up and out. It was getting dark and i had a hard time making my way backwards, following my steps off the ice. I removed the skid marks from my pants and never fished that area again.

I'm just afraid some guys don't realize If you go down 9 out of 10 times your done for:yikes: The current is very strong and will suck you under and down the river.. Best thing to do in that case is just take a huge breath and end it quick  Don't get me wrong i have been on the river ice lots of times when there is about 8 inches of ice :gaga: Be safe people !!
