"ARENAC COUNTY (WJRT) - (01/20/07)--The Coast Guard rescued three people from the Saginaw Bay on Saturday afternoon.

The two adults and 11-year-old child were on some ice when it broke-free and was caught in an ice flow near Au Gres.

They used a cell phone to call for help, and were later rescued by the Coast Guard who pulled them into an airboat.

All three are said to be in good condition tonight.

The Coast Guard says if you're going out on the ice, you need to use extreme caution.

Always carry a cell phone, VHF radio and signaling devices (such as flares) whenever venturing out on the ice."

It is funny how the media has no idea of what happened and where they get there reports from.

I would say it was a lot closer to Standish. 60 feet from shore??!! I would say more like a light half mile. We stood right at the mouth of the Pine and watched them standing there on the ice waiting for the airboat. It was kind of cool to see the heilcopter that close up.

Be careful and smart out there till the ice locks in good.

60ft from shore they could of just walked in would of been cold for a couple minutes lol ...the media likes to scare people it makes for better shock value and higher ratings...

The question should be why was somebody stupid enough to go out there with the ice the way it is????

I agree 100% my 12 year old son wanted to fish with me on an inland lake today. I wont take my kids out unless there is an even 5 plus inches of good ice! I couldn't live with myself if something happened.

I dont want to insult you when you say this...but if the ice isn't safe enough for you to take your son, why are you going?

It is selfish of you to say that you couldn't live with yourself if something happened to him, but completely disregard the fact that he would have to grow up without a father if something happened to you.

I know winter has sucked, and it's nice to FINALLY get SOME ice...but please slow down a little. I really dont wanna hear about any of you guys on the news...

No u didn't insult me. I just feel as an adult i stand a bettder chance of getting out. I use ice picks, also wear my bass fishing flotation device. Also not a big risk taker when it comes to new ice. I do other things that i don't feel are safe or approprate for my kids to do until they are older, Would u stand a better chance with or without a child If something did happen ? The only way for me to know how the ice is, is for me to go out and check it out.
I won;t do that with my kids.

Me and my son will have time on the ice this year and i can't wait!

I can understand that JD.

I was thinking that as I typed too...I remember going out with my dad...and where we were sitting might have been good ice, but did I ever sit where we were sitting? lol...checking popups was never quite "look"...it was walk and cehck and hey look, that ice is cool, and...someone had a hole here.

My uncle has had a few friends that were rescued...and he had a few friends that weren't rescued. I know how it affected him, and can't imagine how it affects the children. Nobody is starving without those fish, it's simply not worth it if it's not safe ice.

And I completely understand having to check it first. It's not hard explaining t a kid, as you are standing on the shore and have already decided that it's ice fishing time, that the ice isn't safe.

Not sure where these folks started fishing from, but if they ended up near the mouth of the Pine, that whole bay is shallow. Yeah, that still doesn't make it right to be out there on that thin ice. But my point is you won't drown in that area. I duck hunt there a lot, and have ice fished some too. On first ice, I've worn my waders before because if you do go through, it's knee deep at most for a long way out.

Again, not positive where these people were, but I question how much real "danger" they were actually in if the water isn't over two feet deep.
