Already have 30-30-, 30/06,. The question, would you get a 270, 7 mm Mag, or a 300 win mag ?

I'd get the .300 Win Mag but in reality all those calibers you mentioned are basically redundancy for North America unless you going after big bears or moose. Sure, the .300 Mag is a step up, but with either Hornady Light Mag ammo or Federal High Energy Ammo in .30-06 your 06 will be close enough.
If you want a big Thirty, think Weatherby or RUM for a step up or just go with the .338 if you feel the need.
To me, if you only have 2 rifles, make the 3rd rifle in a caliber that you don't already have covered. So go heavy .338, or light .223 or .22-250 or .243 etc. Once your addicted to them like some of us, you won't care so much about caliber overlap, you'll just buy something because it's different.

Go with the 300 mag based on what you listed. If you are looking for more shooting time without breaking the bank, go with something like a 223. A 223 is my next rifle. I have the big calibers which are great, but you shoot a box of 20 for $30 and have a sore shoulded the 223 looks like something fun.

I would choose the 300 mag, not the short mag, ultra mag, mega mag ect.. The original 300 mag is a great round.

Nice Set up! But remember, the same gun in the .30-06 can and will do the exact same thing. You'd be dragging with either caliber. For that matter so would the .270 Win with 150 Nosler Partitions. Ask me how I know?;)

Your right swamp, any of the others would do it too. Even my lowly 30-30 dumped one at 225 with open sights! Ughhh shock and awe! a 30-30!

I'm with some of the others. If you just want another gun, pick one. If you want more power, I go up bigger than what you have listed such as at least one of the faster 300 mags or 338's.

Too much of the same thing. Go bigger (.444/45-70/etc) or smaller (.223/243/etc) to add some variety.

there's a strong argument to be made that for medium and large (dangerous) game, no one needs to look further than the 30-06 and the 375 H&H.

if you're not planning on going to alaska for dangerous game, or hunting big brown bears in north american, i'd get the 338 win mag.

the 270 is too close to the 06 in performance, and if i'm getting a mag, i'd like it to be a bigger bore. just not a fan of the 7mm mag or the 300 mag.

though, if you're looking to round out your collection for functionality, i'd get a .223 first.

I got a .300 Winchester magnum and really like it to compliment my .30/06 and .30/30. It depends what you prefer, can handle well and the intended use. The .270 is a great cartridge and handles lighter bullets very well. Something heavier like a .338 is a lot of gun (I have one of those). So it depends. All the best...

I personally am a fan of the Rem. 7mm mag. I have Winchester Model 70and on our recent trip to Quebec caribou hunting, it brought down 4 of the 6 animals we bagged. I'm sure other calibers would have been just as effective, like your -06, it has more to do with what you like to shoot. Like other posters have said, if you're looking for an excuse to purchase another rifle, maybe find something that's fun and affordable to shoot. The .223 would be an exellent choice for that, or quite possibly the .17 HMR or the new .204. Just my 2 cents, have fun!

I wouldnt buy any you have listed, they will all do the same thing, Id probably stock up on ammo and become proficinet in what I have. If I really wanted another gun Id go with a target gun in .223, .243, 22-250 etc, maybe a highend .22lr like a sako or kimber. With the upcoming political situation Id get an AR or AK and a couple thousand rounds of ammo. You never no what the gun grabbers are going to do next. :dizzy:

Hmmmm,... I'd have to agree with what the majority of folks are trying to point out to you. If your trying to round out your firepower choices go with something that will give you killing power at the higher end of the scale.

I personally own the following high power rifles:

6.5X55 Swedish (varmints)
30-06 Springfield (Med. & Large game)
7mm Magnum (Med. & Large game)
8mm Mauser (Med. & Large game)
.300 SAUM (Med. & Large game)

Now all of these are pretty much neighbors to each other as far as knockdown powers go, so I'm in the boat your inquiring about,... and it sounds like your getting ready to duplicate what I've already done.:yikes:

I love all my rifles however they all pretty much are used for the same purposes. I have the 4 medium and large game rifles set up somewhat differently for different kinds of hunting. (IE: long range, tight cover, etc.) My NEXT rifle purchase will either be a .375 or a .416 and used strictly for dangerous game,... then I'll be pretty much rounded out as far as my firepower ranges' go.

Thanks for the info guys. Looking for a gun for out west . Also a varmit gun . I asked about accelators for the 30/30 and the 06. Also does the 22-250 have enough power for canines and deer? Or is it too small for deer. My son is looking at that one. Thanks , D Buck

Federal has a 60gr Partition which will work, but its a light caliber and requires expert shot placement. Not much room for error.
I like the 243 much more for deer applications myself [just my opin]. However, if the 22-250s all you have, Id suggest that load. As far as coyotes and fox, indeed the 22-250 is an excellent choice.

22-250 works fine for deer, as long as you keep shots 150 yards and less.

I'd agree with Huntsman, 22-250 is very light for deer. Like the .223 it will work but is very marginal and I would not reccomend it for a youth. .243 is a much better choice for a dual purpose varmint/deer rifle.
