Well not much to report. We went out Saturday afternoon to a lake in Allegan called Big lake. The water temp was 54-55. The fish were moving and very active from the eyesite look. They didn't want anything to do with a hook. Started out with a nice perch and one small gill. Lots of surface movement from baitfish. Talked to a few other guys at the lake and nobody could seem to find them either. We were using wax worms and leaf worms. Going out again on Saturday to a different lake. Big has got us again empty handed for the second time.

Miner Lake has been hot for the last week in the channels and in Lichteys Bay. They haven't been huge fish but there have been lots of them. Good Luck!!

Thanks skunk, I will think about getting over there maybe. When you say the Lichteys bay where are you talking?

It's straight accross from the public access, If you're gonna go there let me know and I can be more specific on some of the hotspots for me out there. I only live about 2 miles from there and could possibly meet you at the launch.

I will keep that in mind. I am about a 20-30 min drive from there. i have fished back there a few times. Have not caught a lot out of there with any size. But that has also been in the hot summer time in the afternoon.

Try a small black fly tipped with a spike (maggot) under a bubble bobber.

I switched to this setup about 3 years ago at my father-in-law's urging. I catch more gills than I ever did using any other bait or setup. Even the bobber makes a difference. My sister-in-law's husband was skeptical that the bobber made a difference until he went fishing with us. He was using the same bait but with a stick bobber and we were out catching him 3 to 1. It wasn't long before he switched. If there are any waves at all, the action of the bubble bobber can't be beat. Try it, you'll like it!!!

What in the world is bubble bobber? I can't say i have used one yet. What makes the action so great? I guess am a little confused why they would like a maggot over a wax worm. I will look for them for this weekend.

a bobber that is kind of round at one end and tapered at the other. They are about 2 inches long and have an eye at each end, you tie the larger end to the main line and tie the leader to the other end. I usually use a leader of 18" up to 30", so they are not meant for fishing in the deeper water, unless of course they are feeding near the surface.

I think the action comes from the fact that the entire bobber floats on the surface and reacts much more to wave action than your typical stick bobber. An added bonus is that they are quite heavy and improve the cast tremendously. I don't add any weight to the line which helps the fly sink nice and slow.

As far as spikes vs. waxies, there is no comparison in my book. Even if the fish didn't care, I would prefer the spike because of how well they hold up vs. a mushy old waxy. It is nothing to catch a half dozen gills (or more) on the same two spikes on a black fly. They hold up that well.

Take my word and give it a try. You will not be disappointed.
