The forecast sure doesn't look good for getting some solid ice in the next week. Isn't this two straight years they've had trouble with TUT? Maybe they should change the name to "polar bear swim town"?

Went to TUT last year and there was lots of ice. At least 12" everywhere I drilled, plus the Friday before the first weekend they got like 14 or 15" of snow. Killed the fishing cause so many snowmobiles were up there. Still had fun though.

 What's up with the negative attitudes, underground weather shows low temps all next week and getting very cold at night. There's safe ice up north right now people are getting on

For as getting on any sizeable lake/pond up in that area now is false. Houghton,St Helen not even close (have a place on the lake of st. helen) fact. As to alittle more north Van Etten lake in Oscoda township lost a six grader wed. night. after these rains not a chance. I want to go ice fishing just as bad as the next guy but lets relay accurate info. Some people hear THEY ARE GETTING ON NOW AND BAM TO LATE THEN.

Went up to Houghton today to check on a cabin that we are renting in Feb. Lake is froze over no one out fishing went down to the boat launch on the south side of lake and spud went thru in two hits. Didnt head out on main lake. Shouldn't be to long temp was 15 degrees when we got there this morning.

As of today 1/14 at 3pm Houghton Lake is froze over. I saw about a half dozen brave souls out there fishing the hard water in the SE portion of the lake towards Prudenville. They weren't very far off shore, maybe 50-75 yards, but they were out. I also saw one shanty close to shore at the very SW end of the lake, about 40 yards off shore. Also, one person fishing the DNR launch north of Coyles in the launch area.
Lymans in HL is saying 2 in of hard ice on Houghton, check their website if interested.
Higgins however is wide open, with some minimal shore ice and maybe a few mini bergs floating. Two brave groups were parked at the North Higgins Lake SP launch with trucks and empty trailers.
As far as the weather is concerned www.wunderground.com (http://www.wunderground.com) is saying that there will be ice making weather all week. TUT will go on with or without snow and ice.
Just some observations from driving around today.

How much snow are they getting up at HL? What will this do to the ice development?

When I left my place at 10:30 this morning we had about 3-4 inches on the ground from last night's storm. I would guess HL got about the same or a little less.
