I just returned from a 4 day trip on Lake Erie out of Port Clinton. It was a beautiful 4 days with a little rain two of the days but the fish were on the feed the entire time we were there. A lot of catch and release fishing. We caught 90 walleyes over the 4 day period a lot of males and some big hens. All of the reefs in the area are covered with fish at this point and some in shore areas have a lot of fish there also. Crib Reef, Niagra Reef and Cone Reef is where we did most of our reef fishing. The area out in front of the Davis Bessie Nuc. plant in 11-14' of water was very productive also we caught 33 walleyes in this area in just a few hours one afternoon. As far as the big hens you pertty much have to troll for them out in the flats off from the reef complex. We did get three hens on the reefs that ranged in the 5-7# range that were getting ready to spawn. The rest of our big hens come in 24-27' of water on a south troll from the D-can. No wallhanger this year though the biggest was just over 10#'s with a lot of others in the 8-9.7# range. A lot of people troll with Reef Runner Ripsticks for these big hens, but we just couldn't get them to go on them this year. We caught all of our big fish on Rapala Tail Dancers in the Red Tail Chub, Emrald Shiner and Shad patterns. We run these all 80' behind the in-line boards and trolled between 1-1.4 mph. The last day we fished we trolled for three hours and our five biggest fish weighed 39.5#'s we even had doubles on at times a lot of fun with just two people in the boat. The PWT boys were all out there starting to practice on sat., I believe with good weather conditions this will take 120plus pounds to win. A great 4 days of fishing and I can't wait to get back in a couple of weeks.
