i was up there the 3rd thru the 7th and there was ice when we got there but everyday we were up there it was in the 40s and i chickend out and didnt go on the ice.. didnt check the big lake but most of the lake was open water... even the bay wasnt looking so great... with water on the ice and no one fishin. Should be better by this weekend though the weather reports before we left were saying lows in the 20s with highs in the low 30's so i think you should be fine for fishing this weekend not sure about a quad though sounds a little risky there but like you said not till around the 18th or so.... so if this cold keeps up i should think you would be fine. But yeah i chickend out everyone i talked to in every town... curtis, manistiuqe, and escanaba was saying people were going threw the ice like crazy... been there done that... wasnt feeling up to it... plenty more winter left and like i said the weather for up there was only supposed to get colder so you should be fine this weekend i would think... wont take much to freeze that bay back up... not sure about the rest of the lake. sure would like a report when you get back guys. good luck and be safe.

Its 10 degrees this morning but I still see open spots on the big lake and I know the south is still open.(I live by on the big lake just before cooks bay) Suppost to get cold starting sunday.
We also got 7-8 inches of snow yesterday,so we'll see.
