When marten, fisher, bobcat, and bear are all animals that get registered with the DNR.Why do they still waste money on surveys for all of them?I would think the info that they are asking for is already in their possesion somewhere.I got my marten survey today and just thought I'd ask about it here. Thanks for any replies.Rancid

Data is continually evolving and this is the cheapest way of obtaining the info.;)

You forgot otter. Thes surveys are very important to the DNR to set bag limits and season dates. The comments on the surveys are compliled and forwarded to work groups which eventually make it to the NRC who sets the limits and dates.

.......They are also helpful to savy conservation officers who scour them looking for discrepancies. ;)

I'd love to hear some of the discrepancies. But that makes more sence.

In the UP, the marten and fisher surveys are key to managing the herd. It tells them how many were taken and what they can possibly expect in the future. They're numbers are actually quite low, so they want to make sure they're not overharvesting.

For bear, it's all about numbers also. Age and area can have some important info too.

I guess what I can't figure out is.All these animals are registered. What happens to the info they get from that.once the season closes and the registrations are over nothing should change.they have species, area taken in,name of trapper or hunter etc.where is all that info that's taken at that time?If they need more info ask it at the time of registration.I think it might save a couple of dollars that they are so short of.

I got ya.

Even though you do or do not register an animal, you are still sent a survey because they want to know how your season went. They tally how many guys actually went after the species, how many were successful, how many days were spent chasing them and how many of each species was observed while in the field.

Ex: I just got my fisher and marten survey. Since I didn't have time to go after them this year, I just checked a box that said something along the lines of "Didn't attempt to trap...." On the other hand, if someone did attempt, there were multiple questions to be answered. Those replies are compiled and research can be done using those observations.

Hope it helps!

Actually rancid, I forgot you received a marten survey. Look at the letter that is enclosed with the survey. They give a good explaination with that.

I guess I was'nt thinking about how many were out there trapping and how many were successful vs. unsuccessful.I see it now.Thanks.

She was a Bayerl and their farm was on County Rd.............Hmmmm! my wife is having a brain fart and can't remember the name.........but it is west off US41 and is the paved road that would form the crossroads in downtown Birch Creek where Matt Myers bar used to be.....I think it's still a bar, but not by that name.

We were married in Birch Creek.
