I wonder why they are cheaper up there? I thought Mercury was made in the USA.

I had originally looked at purchasing my new boat in Soo, Canada last fall, and between boat and motor, it was going to be around $5500.00 cheaper. The dealer I worked with in the Soo stated that they are cheaper because the Canada Government does not require all the EPA standards and testing that is required in the US. He stated they are the EXACT same motors, they just would not have the EPA stickers on them. Whether this was true or not, I don't know. There was also no taxes on the motor, which would have been another chunk of change saved.

Come to find out at the last minute, my bank "did not feel comfortable sending that much money to canada", so the deal fell through. I now paid $6000.00 more to purchase the EXACT same boat here in MI. But I have met a couple of great dealerships that I would highly recommend to any one in southern MI.

I understand the post above about spending money in the States, but $6000.00 is ALOT of money when purchasing a new boat and trying to start a new business.

It seams kind of funny that someone living in the soo can drive 2 miles and save that kind of money.

Thanks for listening,

Captain Jay

hey Captain Jay, what kind of boat was it? where was it manufactured. how much of it was imported parts.

I work in multi-national manufacturing. Even when a sticker says 'Made in America' it is almost never true, and usually means assembled.

So you have to ask yourself, of that extra $6000 you paid, just how much of stayed in the U.S.?

BTW if you buy things out of the country you always have the option to declare it and pay taxes on it.

Just a quick note as well.

The same thing happens with snowmobiles. The dealers here in MI really get screwed on what they can make on sleds.

I will make one comment, and that is you better check the warranty stipulations. I am not sure if it is still this way, but it used to be that the warranty was NOT valid in the U.S. !

Therefore, if anything went wrong, you were talking about driving back to Canada to have the work done, or paying full price for the repairs. The dealers could not put in for re-imbursement from the manufacturer, so they would turn the client away.

Doesn't do alot for the Manuafacturer name. I am surprised they have not put regulations for imort on them the way they have for cars.

The boat I was looking at (and purchased locally) was a Lund 2150 Baron with a 225 Mercury Optimax. I had contacted my local dealer, who contacted BOTH Lund and Mercury for me, and advised that the warranty WAS valid for both, and would have nothing to do with where it was purchased.

BUT...I must also say, I contacted a dealer near Curtis who advised that they would not work on it if it was purchased in Canada. I didn't really get into the reason with them, I just was curious, so I called around to dealers I'd dealt with in the past.
If any one does purchase in Canada, I would suggest contacting your local dealer and asking if they will do warranty work on it.

The good news is.....it was purchased in MI, and I've had no problems since I got it.
