Sorry SKI, I'm not familiar with them. I have had good success with St. Clair Flats Taxidermy. It will probably take approx 9 months to get you fish back but I have been very pleased with their work. My son has a 22 in. Smallie there now. They are on M29 just before Algonac MI. Let me know if you would like any more info.

All I know is after dealing with a couple of taxidermists to get one sons 18 lb laker and the others 22lb salmon mounted that whatever they tell you time wise, add 3 months.

And stay away from Lutz's taxidermist in Ironton.

Does it take so long because of the process of stuffing the fish or is it usually because of a backlog of work? Just curious.

I will tell you of the best taxidermist that I have come across. I have eight deer heads, three fish, three turkey tails done by him, and three other animals in the shop right now. His business is called All Creatures Taxidermy. His name is Troy Fear and is one of the best artist I have ever seen. He can paint your fish exactly how it looked. I will tell you that I have used three other taxidermists and he is the best. He went to school to be an artist and was an art teacher. He found that the art of taxidermy was what he wanted. If you want more info. let me know. PM me

I helped a neighbor when we were young teeny boppers & I know how long things take - even with the 'advent' of new technological advances , it is mostly sheer LAZINESS... When I was young we did bass, salmon , trout , fox , deer capes , several furbearers - sure there is some lead time for ordering supplies - forms, eyeballs - etc.
but it doesn't take all that time - just milking a steady paycheck that's the main reason for the backlog...
Sounds like DZtax would like your business to me!!!!

Let me tell you about "DZTaxidermy" of what I know. I met the man, he talks straight and to the point. He encourages you to tell him what EXACTLY you want. He will give it to you. I have taken my 29.5" / 11.1 lb. Walleye to him for mounting that I caught just prior to season pause. He's mounting the fish in attack position after a 6" Perch. Dan Zuck is his name, he has e-mailed me a couple photos of the fish in "mid-process" to keep me in the loop so to speak. The fish looks OUTSTANDING ! Your choice of positions, paint effects, finishes etc. Very happy with what is going on with DZTaxidermy.

My humble opinion.

I dont know about you guys, but who cares how fast you get it back? I care about a trophy that I want to keep for many years to come. MOST taxidermist do bear, ducks, geese, turkeys, deer, antler mounts, small game, etc. AND yes it takes time and preperation to do certain animals all together. I know that birds are most easily done in cold weather, compared to the summer. So when its still cooler in the spring, tax. are doing birds instead of deer. That is just an example. I will wait a whole year for a reputable taxidermist to do my work.

just my opinion

I care. I too want a high quality mount, but I do not want or expect to have to wait nine months or a year to get it !!! There are enough reputable and highly skilled Taxi's out there so that is not an issue.

On a side note: question, why would weather determine when a mount is processed ?, unless the Taix's doing the work on the picnic table in the backyard. Ever hear of heating/air conditioning ?, climate control ya know.

Why do I care when I get it back? Because it was what was promised, that's why. My younger boys salmon was caught in mid-August. When I took the fish to Lutz's I asked him will I get it back for Christmas? He of course said no problem. So I promised this fish as a Christmas present to a 9 year old at the time. Come April, still without the fish, I lost it. Why? April 10 was his birthday. I get the fish is it looks like some kind of whale species. If it was for me, I would of told him to stick it, for my son, I paid the guy, but swore I would make sure he'd never get any business from me.

Like I said, I have used three until I finally found one that is TOP NOTCH. I really dont care how you like your mounts or how fast you want them. I am just trying to help you out Stein with a good taxidermist that I have used first hand. He tells you one year, and you WILL get it back before that time.

I guess Whale, you havent spent time in many shops. Weather does play a part with taxidermy. I am not going to get into the spec. just check it out for yourself. Even if you have air, heat etc.

Those are some real mature responses. I hope you are real happy with your taxidermist like I am. I was just trying to help out another and not be narrow minded by wanting your mount back so fast, and maybe NOT having the best of work. If any of you have found a taxidermist that you are happy with then great.

And I wont comment on the immature posts right before this one.

Taxidermy Rule #1

The bitterness of poor quality will last longer than the bargin of cheaper price.

Taxidermy Rule #2

Fiberglass reproductions will last longer than skin mounts, look better artistically, and allow the C/R of the fish.
