Does anyone know of a gunsmith around the Livonia area that does inexpensive gun cleaning? Shooters charges $30-$35 to break down a shotgun and do a good cleaning but I'm trying to find someplace cheaper than them in southeast Michigan. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

you may want to try Guns Galore in Fenton. I don't know how much they charge but its worth a shot.

O.k. without sounding like a smart allic but just looking for information what do gun smiths do different that would want me to pay to have it done? Is it just knowledge of tare down and inspection for excess wear, or do they use some special equipment other that the standard gun cleaning kit?

Well they are gun smiths, they can break down the bolt or action of a firearm and do a great cleaning. Plus they can inspect for excess wear. Some special tools they have and testing abilities for the inspection. I know a guy who bought a gun used shotgun. It looked great and didn't seem to be used much either. Took it to a gun smith, the gunsmith came back and said I am glad you brought this gun to me for inspection. As the gunsmith found a hairline crack in the chamber area of the gun. The gunsmith said it was only a matter of time before some one got hurt from using this gun. It was an old stevens 12 gauge. My buddy ended up keeping it for a collection piece and bought a new 870. But to answer your question gunsmiths have special dyes and inspection instruments. That they can use to inspect a gun after they clean it.

I don't expect them to do anything different than I would do, I'm just lazy Plus there is the off chance that I may misplace or lose a spring or something. And while he's cleaning one gun I'll be out getting another one dirty:lol:

How long does it take the average person to completely break down a gun and give it a thorough cleaning?

Exactly Ken, and Based on your post I am assuming that your getting a gunsmith and he will be doing $10 cleaning since it doesn't take but a minute. Man, you guys over there at KD are awsome, Let me know when I should bring them by.;)

Actually.....when I do own my guns, giving them a complete breakdown and thorough cleaning, I usually spend abot 30-45 minutes on each one.

I think Shooter's is charging a pretty fair price based on time and supplies used. :)

I don't know about you, but for someone to treat my gun like I would want them to, $35 seems awfully fair. I could dunk it in kerosene and hit it with a blowgun for $5 if that's what your looking to spend.

since you seem that you don't want to spend the time cleaning the gun I will pay you 35 bucks for the gun then you won't have to worry about cleaning it. No matter what type of gun it is 35 bucks is a good price for any dirty gun.

The thing is gunsmiths have all kinds of specialized tools to disasemble a firearm. If they scratch it or damage it they will pay to fix it. I'm not about to use my auto mechanic tools to work on my guns.
That being said my 13 year old son takes all his gun's apart and cleans them.

30-35$$$ is pretty cheap, and for someone that's lazy that should be a no brainer! roger does a fine job, and so do all his gunsmiths. that place has been in the family for i don't know how many years and stays in business by reputation alone! you can't beat a ***trained eye*** for 35$ and if something is wrong or about to go out you'll get a call from the store asap. my dad and i have been going their for over 30 years. but if you want a 5-10$ job email me and i'll have her done with one wire brush and a swab and some spray oil in 180 seconds or less-- and thats my final offer!

Don't know about you guys, but it seems like everytime I do the "thorough" cleaning I spend a lot of time trying to figure out how it all goes back together. PITA if you ask me. I'm short on cash and long on time so I still do it myself. I've never been showed how to do this and just kind of figure it out for myself so who knows what I am missing. I doubt you need it cleaned by a gunsmith that often so that $30-35 shouldn't hurt too much.

To try and give you some help on this though I thought I would suggest Johnsons in Adrian. Very reputable and great service in my experiences with them. I have heard, but don't know for certain, that Cabela's uses them too.

One thing to keep in mind, you usually get what you pay for.

Ok, here we go...
outdoorzman, I didn't say shooters was not fair, I asked if anyone knew of a cheaper price, apperently you don't know of one.

bigcountrysg, I did not ask if anyone wanted to buy a gun but send me a check and i'll give you a gun...any gun.

swampbuck62, I'm sure your very proud of your 13 year old son but I did't say I couldn't do it, I just don't want to do it.

danial mark zapolski, I didn't bad mouth shooters and as you say $30-$35 might be cheap but I will bet you that they are not the cheapest place to to get quality work, will you take that bet?

ibethetrout, $30-$35 wouldn't hurt too much but I have 4 guns that need a good thorough cleaning and that starts to add up.

Now i'm sure some of you "helpful" people are some of the same people who have preached, in the past about how we all need to support our local mom and pop shops so if anyone has any help for me to find some good places, I thank you. But for all you others that think you have to type something even though you don't have a clue, please, do us all favor and just stay off that keyboard for a while. Why some of you guys post anything is beyond me.

Ken, my bow worked out great, except I think one of the fletchings is hitting part of the rest before it drops out of the way because I have a little black line on the fletching starting to appear from it rubbing on something, I'll have to bring it on in and have you guys take a look at it...that is if thats ok with these other guys that know whats better for me.

hey War Eagle chill out ok. If you read my first posting on this thread. You will see I mentioned Guns Galore in Fenton. I recommended that you give them a call. If all you want for a gun is a check heck I can send you one. Might not be filled out but if all you need is a check I can do that.

i guess you weren't kidding when you said you were lazy! 4 weapons going to the tubes. bejing, china might be the best bet going for cheap. and oh yes take a chill pill! on the positive side if they're dirty enough maybe you won't use them and get hurt by them ( worst yet don't loan them out either ) and that's not a ****joke**** dirty guns can kill just like the empty ones do!
and that's due to not giving your weapon a visual inspection before and after every use. i saw a lot of s^&(*t in the military happen from bad weapons and poor care of them and that was in nam my man! **not a joke at all**

I just paid $35 to have my pump shotgun, a weapon that was my high school graduation (1962) gift from my parents. broken down and thoroughly cleaned and was more than happy to pay it out. It is silky smooth now.

Such a take down and cleaning is beyond my ability and patience.

As for the comments made by the members in here they are fine and what you'd find in any gathering place of sportsmen/women. None were meant to be taken personally. An opinion was asked and other opinions were given.

Whit1, if you noticed I did not ask for anyones opinion, I requested help in finding a service. If anyone finds it neccessary to voice there opinion they should not hi-jack my thread to do so. None the less I do appreciate you telling me how much you paid, as it does give me a comparison.

Wareagle, do check out Johnsons. I had to take in one of my guns, happens to be the exact same gun that Whit just mentioned (JC Higgin pump 12 ported poly choke, right Whit?!) that repair only cost me $25.

With ventilated rib?....................Yes!

It was made by High Standard for Sears' J.C. Higgins line of firearms.

If you are talking about Johnsons Sporting goods in Adrian. War Eagle stop by my house I'll clean your gun for what it would cost you to drive to Adrain from Livonia.
