View Full Version : 10-22 Failure to Fire

Hi, I have a Ruger 10-22, that will fail to fire 2 to 3 times per 10 rounds. I keep the gun pretty clean, but I lost the factory clip in the woods somewhere, and replaced it with one of those hot lips clips, and that's when the problem started. The rims are all dented, but don't fire. This has happened with remington thunderbolts and CCI minimags. What are your thoughts on what this may be?

I think you answered your own question! If it did not happen prior to replacing the clip than you must have a bad or incompatable clip. You need to buy a factory clip and go back to what you had before.

I would have suggested the ammo but it sounds like you already tried that.

I just wasn't sure if it was coincidental or not, or that a clip could could cause that.

Thanks,
Ben

I'll second the clip idea. I have a 10/22. I have 2 Ruger clips that function flawlessly. I used to have an aftermarket "banana" clip that would not feed for crap. Notice I said "used to have", after giving me grief one too many times, it got used for a target!:smile-mad

I had 2, but they fell out of my hunting vest, then in a pinch I put the el crapo.

You will probably be able to find the factory magazine at a local gun shop. The mom and pop shops need the business just as much if not more than the big-box stores.

They might also be able to tell if something is wrong with the aftermarket one that you have. And, like "tjfishinboy" suggests, get a second OEM magazine.

Yes the clip is the first thing to check. Let us know if that fixes the problem. By the way I have a black one and a clear 40th anniversary version. I love the clear one as you can tell at a glance how many rounds are left. Usually they are a few dollars more but I think it's worth it.

Let me toss a monkey wrench into the clip issue. I had nothing but trouble with my factory clips. I switched to a 10 round hot lips and 25 and 50 rd ram lines. Have had no problems since. I would ask a gunsmith but if the mags are feeding and the cases are dented it sounds more lika an ammo issue. I bought a tin of remingtons awhile back and I'll bet 1 out of 10 shots was a misfire. And I was using two differant semi-auto 22's

I'm gonna replace the magazines first, as I like them better than the hot lips, then I'll talk with a gunsmith if that doesn't fix it.

Bought factory clips, 1 out of 20 failed to fire. Then it dawned on me that because I have a 10-22T T meaning target model, I think the firing pin is shaped different to provide a more precise impact, and standard off the shelf ammo likes a wider fatter strike. I know this sounds far fetched, but I did some reading and was able to convince myself that that may be the issue. So I'll buy a new pin and see what happens next.

im not so sure. is it failing to feed? or failiing to fire? once the round is stripped into the chamber the clip your using makes no difference. however if its not feeding then id say clip. from what your saying i suspect a different fault . one that may need a professional to correct.Hi, I have a Ruger 10-22, that will fail to fire 2 to 3 times per 10 rounds. I have had the saem problem once in a while with mine also, factory and aftermarket mags. Mainly with the thunderbolt ammo, same thing, the rim is dented but did not fire.

This is pretty common with rimfire's, but it does sound like the mag is the cause of it.
