Shock collars are the only way to go. I bought a tritronic and its money well spent, no more chasing down dogs or having them ruin a hunt. Its also great for breaking them from running deer.

No dog here, my buddy and i who i was hunting with today do not like to use a dog when hunting rabbit. Mainly him we just pushed through the brush on our own. But I cam home with three of them so I am happy. It is great excercise even if i didn't get any i would of been happy to been able to get out today and walk in nature.

tell me more about walking up rabbits without a dog? any tricks? I have done it with limited success. Is this cotton tails or snow shoes?? are you real quiet? tracking snow necessary?

well you walk through thick brush i wear carhart bibs doign this for the protection you walk slow and in a zig zag patren. Noise the more the better. As the noise makes the rabbits run. You have to go slow and keep your eyes open for the cotton tails. That is what we were hunting today cotton tails down in dundee. It worked great where we were. Good luck. Mainly work a zig zag patren through the thick brush be prepared to shoot and be prepared to run in to some thorn bushes as I did to day. Its more work believe me but it if you like cotton tails it is worth it.

Right on, I will have to try that sometime this winter, now that almost everything else is closed :-( . I don't know why, but early in the season I walk into lots of snowshoes, I normally pass on them in sept and early october a least. Then in January, I go looking for them, and rarely find more than one. If I get the chance, I am going to try to track some in fresh snow, I think that would be fun, and maybe productive.

No problem, remember you got to go where the rabbits are. those thick briar patches you would normally avoid during deer season. Thats where you got to trench your way through push yourself through them briar patches. Being quite not gonna happen. I shot one while me and my buddy were pushin throw some tall grass. I seen movement I dentified my target as a cottontail and fired. before I seen the cottontail me and my buddy were just B/Sin as we walked through the grass or the briar patches. One reason for that is so know where our hunting partner is. Secondly kills time and makes it easier to push through thick brush. Because your not thinking about what your walking through. Also in real heavy thick stuff you gotta take turns on that stuff. Like you walk through the real thick stuff once. The next patch of thick heavy brush your buddy pushes through it. Because the thickness might not allow you to have a shot. But your buddy might have a shot if he is walking the outside perimeter of the brush as you walk through it.
