Spring is here, fish are not. Crappie Fishing 4-10

went to a small south east private lake near me that hold's crappie. Also tossed some lure's for different species. Got nothing to hit. Fish from 3:30 to 7. Some gill's kept me interested. I'll give it another try sometime in the next week.

Find the right temp by using a thermometer.
I'll bet the water was cold.

It probably was cold but I thought at least one crappie would be in. Im surprized there hitting up north but not down here yet. Wierd year I guess

if you are not busy saturday afternoon you should come over here and fish lake ovid with us. dont know what the water temp is yet, but it is a fairly shallow lake and should warm up pretty quick (hopefully).

what lures were you using, and what type of area were you fishing in?? ie. structure, drop-off and what not.

We just cannot sometimes locate actively - FEEDING fish ....:cool:

did you locate and concentrate on the warmest available water?????

Hey Quix20:

I was out on Lake Ovid yesterday tursday 4-11. Thought I would see if i could catch a few crappie. I didnt catch a one or even see any moving up into the shallows. My water temp gauge said 37-39 deg. A guy I talked to on the lake said his read 42.

Just thought id share my observations for you. I am not much of a crappie fisherman. But i did spend a few hours tossin around a beetle spin.

I found some crappies yesterday.....caught 20 in a couple hours. There were allot of small perch in the same area and the little suckers kept taking my bait otherwise I probably could have got a few more specks. The were biting VERY light. I did see schools of small gills that kept coming out of the water as they were being chased by muskies. Was quite amusing to watch. The water temp was in the 40's and the crappies were suspended in about 8 - 10 ft. of water. I couldn't find any in the shallows. We need a couple good warm rains.

Quix, thanks for the invite but that is a little far for me. At 15.5 miles per gallon, I would be broke soon.

The water was quite cold and another guy was fihsing them and had no luck eitherhe was hammering the gill's though. I might try tonight depending on the river, I will post if I go. Good luck this week quix.

i know the feeling about gas dan. look at all the miles that i have put on my car since i bought it in jan. (almost 10,000). and now things are starting to go on it!!

thanks for the info nuts, hope that they move a little bit while we are out there.

I forgot to add, there was a small blck hatch on the river. I could not tell what it was. Very interesting.
