A few years ago, a friend of mine showed me a method of fishing for walleye from the boardwalk using VERY stiff rods, 2 or 3lb weights, and rapalas or spoons. Has anyone else done this type fishing, and where can I pick up gear for this type fishing. I haven't run across any rods that would be able to take that amount of weight, also the rod holders (if you don't have to make your own), and super long handled net. I have the rest and it was a very enjoyable way to spend a night. Pretty productive too. Thanks for the help.

I also heard of this type of fishing ,but have not been able to give it a try. I have a couple of shorter Shakespear tiger rods I purchased from lakeside tackle for running heavy weight 1lb+++ on the corners of my boat for muskie at about 5mph. (Downrod). These should work well for the type of fishing your talking about. Be sure to use heavy main line and if your fishing for walleye branch off with a three way with something lighter to your bait. A guy I now at work has used this set-up successfully. If you go in the near future let me know how you did. Might entertain the idea of trying it myself. Good luck!!! and always remember that if your line is'nt in the water your not going to catch anything. So fish your @$$%#^% off!!!!

Lochness, yes that was me , for the prize put it this way, it was well worth it to win. the fish was caught out by the weather bouy on the south side of the lake at around 7 pm , fish measured out to be 52 3/8ths long good enough for the first place win, hope to see you there in July.

I think a M or M/H down rigger rod would work for it.

MSUICEMAN,, It's been a long time since I fished that way but I used to have a great time with my father and grandfather. Chad from Great Lakes Outfitters should be able to help you. He is a member at this site,,just search for him. Also there was a bait shop called Anglers located in the city of St.Clair. That's how I caught my firt ten pounder. Nice quite nights on the St. Clair River is always a good time. Hope this helps anything else e-mail me.

MSUICE, The guys are all fishing for trout right now in that spot. Saw a nice steelhead caught last night right at dusk. You can PM tubjig, he knows quite a bit about the process and proper time of year. I'm sure he would give a few pointers. Walleye are on the way. The triangle weight actually weighs 24 ounces. I think you could easily get away with a downrigger rod. I saw some guys who actually had a reel fastened to a bamboo cane pole.

I wouldnt use a downrigger rod with 1-2# weights. tried it once and broke my rod. you need a 5-6 foot fiberglass heavy action rod to fish that way. just check out the local bait shops and they will set you up. Right now, the walleyes should turn on and start biting. the water temp is 39-40 degrees, but with the warm weather will only improve. I will be going down tonight and will post my results tommorrow.

Well, I went down from 6:30-12:30 and didnt get a thing. The smelt ran really spotty also, we only ended up with 15 and that was better than the rest. A guy next to me got a real nice steelhead earlier in the day. As far as that goes, nothing else was caught. We need warmer water:(
