ok we got my stepmom a crossbow for christmas because she has 80+percent muscle damage in her shoulder. shes getting the permit for it so she can use it for bow.

heres my questions.

can you use real feathers on thebolts?

can you use aluminum bolts? if so do you have to put those weight tubes inside so it weighs more?

do you think she could shoot the atom broadhead from this place?

i to will soon be using a bolt for an arrow, and the answer to the bolt is yes. aluminum is very good. i know for a fact that the xx75 arrow shaft cut to 20" is used on the horton legend and horton hunter crossbows and my dad uses
*************fred bear razors************ the ones he started out using back in the 50's and they still kill deer today as good as they did back then. i know this for a fact because i'am the one who tracks / gutts / and drags em for him now ( pops is 86 years young ) and i butcher them for him to. i have a few buddies who have changed their broadheads to bear heads after seeing the holes and penetration of those bad boys!
as far as weights go, don't add any! the bolts are designed for that bow and weight will just change the flight and kill your feet per second. feathers are allright to use but be ready to replace them, vanes are much better. i'am going to try blazers on my xx75's and a 100 grain exspandable versus the bear head and see what i can develope

I have just recieved an old wildcat crossbow that is great condition. For those cross-bow guroos out there what would be my best set up. It has a 140Ibs recurve limbs. I am thinking going with Carbon bolts, and a fixed broadhead. What size broadhead do you all use?

Thanks,

I think feather life would be very short and plastic works fine so go with it, I have shot them with NO fletching and supprisingly it shot them same @ 20 yards.

The difference between aluminum and carbon is impossible to notice, it there is any.

And rule #1 although you can be accurate to huge distances it is a 20-30 yard weapon............thats it.

Broadheads, Thunderhead 125's do the trick for me, I did have a mechanical open in flight so i switched.

it wouldnt slow down the speed or anything using feathers would it?

im very partial to feathers i would much rather use feathers thatn not hunt at all.

what about the weight difference between the aluminum and carbon that has no effect?

thanks sorry for all the questions.

TJ, just curious, why is there such strong feeling for the feathers? My brother uses them and they seem slow and noisy. I've also noticed the feathers seperating from each other when they get wet.

well its not as strong as i made it sound but to me the reasons are

1. more forgiving if i happen to hit a branch or leaf
2. more traditional feel to me.
3. feathers dont get kinked up as easy in your bow box.

but other than that thatstheonly reasons. plus thats what i started with, it works so i dont fix it.

my feathers rarely seperate even when theyre drenched. if they do they still fly the same if you push back the feather.

Hi Guys! Found this site when I was trying to support Prop 3. Can give you a little info on crossbows, have 3 and they are all I hunt w/. The very best b-head I've tried is the 100 gr 1 1/8" Slick Trick. Alot of b-heads that work well on arrows for verticle bows don't do well on the shorter crossbow arrows. If you have a compound type crossbow, you might want to keep an eye on your arrows over all weight, too light can damage the bow. One last thing, make sure you use the correct type nock in your arrows, either flat or half moon, depending on mfgr. Straight arrows to all!!

I shoot a PSE Copperhead Viper, XX75 2219 aluminum bolts 20 inchs long and Spitfire 100 grain broadheads. Took a doe this year and it did it's job. I have never tried an insert to add weight to the arrow, they shoot just fine with out it. I have also never used feathers, I buy the bolts already made and they are always plastic veins. The mai thing with the cross bow is limiting the distance to 30 yards or less and shot placement just like a compound bow or long bow.
