Ok guys, the christmas tree was super dry and had to come down before it burned up the house. Now I'd like to get it good and wet again. (w/out just peeing on it) the question I have is can I legally take it to a local lake that I fish regularly and sink it or is that considered litering? Also, is there a depth that is best for this type of "structure" Got a new gps for christmas so I am looking forward to marking the spot and thinking about putting it in the middle of a big 6-8ft sand flat so I can chase the gills and crappie through the ice. (ps. anyone want a magellen 210 you can find it about 1/4 mile strait out from erie metro park launch in about 7 feet of water  )

From what I have read about this you need a permit to do so. Might just be safer to pee on it:lol:

How do you go about getting the permits for dropping structure?

I don't know if putting in on a sand flat will attract all that much attention from fish. I'd put it maybe a few feet from a weedbed, or somewhere where there's a little more cover. And depending on the size of the tree I'd be careful. I know we've had some trees with diameters of 5-6ft. in the past, and on a 6-8ft. flat, you could hurt someone with that.

Though I do not know the law, in general I would say this is a bad idea. If something does not get into a body of water by natural causes, then it probably should not be there. The last poster is also correct, if you are hell bent on doing this, put it somewhere deep enough that it is not going to cause problems for boaters come thaw. While I appreciate the thought process and all, if you are chasing gills, get out a lake map, ask some locals, or drill a few more holes and you will find em'. These are gills we are talking about, I don't think they are too difficult to find and most people I meet are willing to spill the beans about the general area they are getting them. Good Luck and happy hunting.

thanks guys,
yes, I am certainly going to be carefull about the depth safety factor, and my plan is to put it next to a pretty good drop off. maybe on the deep side after the advice. now all I have to do is get ahold of the local dnr guy and see if I can get a permit.
ps krull--I'm not just looking for a few gills, but also for the spring crappie and ..........
