WALLEYE MIKE
04-09-2002, 08:02 PM
Well thursday is the day. Will hit the Trenton channel for the first time. Hoping to catch some of those bigguns. Will be launching from Elizebeth park. Should I go south towards the Edison plant or north up towards Riverview? Yes, I will follow the boats once I know where and what I am doing. If any of you will be out there I'll be in a green 18ft Tracker with full windshield, say hi.
Any last minute tips you want to share? Please post or PM me. Hope to have some pics to show when I return.
I"ll be on Channel 68, Just yell for walleye mike.

I would first try the usual spot by Edison, also dont ignore the Grosse Isle side. Also down by Calf Island, too. I was up by Great lakes a few times, seems they arent up that way heavy yet. But you never know!
I will be out Saturday, black and tan C-liner with the I/O and the Merc kicker.

Hi Mike, don't neglect the shallow water!
A lot of guys fish Edison and the deeper water slots, But we have done very well in shallower water (6-8ft) along the shoreline below Edison, and right in front of Humbug Marina.
My best technique has been "swimming" the jig, just lift it about 2-6" slowly and drop back down slowly, keeping a tight line. A buddy who fishes the MWT (actually the reigning 2 time champion)
showed me the trick.
You will be amazed how quickly you feel the slightest tick of the bottom or a fish inhaling the jig if you move it slow and concentrate on the jigs position in the water.
Good luck
John
P.S. I'm hoping to get the boat on Erie Saturday for a shakedown, and some shallow water Eyes.
You still in for Lexington, on the 21st ?

Was at a seminar with Mark Martin and thats what he said. Don't bounce it off the bottom constantly, let it dangle slightly off the bottom then drop, let it dangle for a ways then drop.

I had an afterthought, if the sun is out and the water is stained, the shallow water will warm quickly. JACKPOT?
I wish I could get out there, but the river fishing doesn't look good for me this year. If I do get down there I'll be trying some REALLY different techniques, because I don't have a trolling motor!

Definitely post a report on Silver Lake Dunes! I'm heading up there in late July with the entire neighborhood! Alway's have a great time there.
I am also planning on hitting the river on thursday. What really scares me is the weather forcast. The one I looked at was calling for 15-20 mile an hour winds out of the sse. I made the 125 mile each way trip this past sunday when there were similar wind situations. 3 foot seas are about all my baot wants to handle safely and I couldnt hardly fish. It was just too rough for me to keep any type of a verticle presentation.
What do some of you locals with more experience think? Should I take the vacation day and make the trip down? just how rough do you think the water will be? Maybe there was some other weather related factor that was causing the rough seas out there last sunday?
I would really be interested in what you guys think on this one. I love to jig for walleyes and I dont need everything to be just perfect...........but the conditions this past sunday were just out of my league.

Hey nuts, weather channel is calling for south winds 10-20mph. tomorrow. But thats very generic. I'll watch the 5 pm. news and post what they say.
Yep 10-20mph. Should be calm in the morning, I hope.

I would have to say that it maybe be choppy out there with 10 to 20 MPH winds from the south.
You may not even want to go after you hear about the oil spill on the news this evening. Hope they get it cleaned up and fast.
