Hey electronics gurus, got a question for ya. I just bought a new handheld Garmin Gps on Sunday. I got the Legend Cx, the color legend. Anyway, I want to put maps in it now for fishing. Walleye is my game and the body of water that I fish 99% of the time is Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River. What exactly do I do now? I've seen and heard some things about Blue Chart, but what exactly is it that I do next? Is it a chip that goes into the unit? Am I buying a CD-ROM that I load into my computer to load into the GPS? Is it easy to follow the prompts? You guys see what I'm getting at here? Any help/advice/directions will be most appreciated. Thanks guys.:)

I have lake map pro on my boat unit and that is a very nice program. I am pretty sure you can get it for a Garmin unit. That comes both ways (cd or chip) as I recall. Rick

Blue chart is available in both CD rom and micro sd cards. You would have to download the maps of the area you want from the CD to your gps unit.
The maps would be stored on your micro sd card that came with your gps.
You could also buy the same map area already loaded on a chip for your unit. This would be simply "plug and play". I went this route when I bought my map for lake michigan. The advantage to buying the CD is that you can
puchase addition "unlock codes" at a later date. All the maps of the great lake regions come on the CD that you buy. But you can only unlock one region at a time. You can buy the addition regions at a reduced price. So if you think you may expand your fishing area later, it may be more ecconomicle to buy the CD. The garmin website has all the info you might need. Hope this helps

You are right Steve. You cannot use software from Magellen, Lowrance, etc for each other.

Fisheater, check out these sites as they offer pretty good prices:

www.gpsonsale.com
www.davesmarineelectronics.com

I've used both and have had great service.
