I am looking to take a 5-7 day trip to SWA and have never been there. I have read a great deal of the area regs concerning access, usage, camping permits etc.... what I do not have is direct information concerning best lakes to fish, what time of year is best for fishing, types of lures to take and so on. I am looking to c&r alot of smallmouth, but plan on eating fish at night, with that in mind any information you have in mind would be greatly appreciated.

Hey MO..

I went up to SRA about 10 years ago... The only lake that we fished was whitefish lake. Its a real nice lake with only 3 sites on it. Its a project getting there, 2 lakes to paddle and 2 portages through some nasty bug country. We caught a ton of smallies, once we found them, We fished for two days with little sucess till I threw on the snorkel gear and found them! 4-6" texas rigged crawlers fished around the boulders in 15- 25' of H2O was the ticket. The water is super clear so light line is a must. As far as time of year, I would shoot for the 2nd week of june or so. This is around the time of the spawn so the fish may be a little easier to locate. I would highly recomend avoiding the black fly season ( can't remember when it is though) they are evil!!!!! Beautiful country though, hope to get back up there someday!!
