was readin' "My first Biggin' " and recalled the event of my first 10 pounder ....thought it would be interestin' readin' to post and hear stories of "My First 10 pounder" (or Biggin')

My bud Bill, his son and myself were out on Eire on a saturday, chasin' Eyes...and not doin' bad. we were all gettin' close to our limits for the day, when I hooked into a nice eye. we were driftin' Eire Derie type lures, and hittin' doubles now and then. about 2 seconds later Bill hooks into one, so it's up to Joe to net the fish. Bill gets his to the boat first, and Joe scoops it up. just after mine comes to nettin' range, Joe emptyed the net, swong over the side and promptly stabs my fish in the mouth.....boom...there she goes....no biggie, we were into the fish, and the boy was just in the early stages of nettin' fish...but the fish looked to be of the 7 to 8 pound class.....would have been nice in the freezer. in the next hour we hit our limit and headed home.

the next day, sunday we headed out again. same spot, fish still there. Joe felt comfortable fishin' with two rods today, so I gave him one of mine to use, the only other spare rod I had with me in the boat was a untra light Mitchel set up, with 4 pound test . my panfish rod for the ride home. so I put it in to use...the freezer had a fair amount of walleye in it, so I, and Joe's dad, Had Joe nettin' all the fish...and he was doin' well, knocked only 1 of 7 off so far for the day. well, my second rod took to bendin', you knoe the Ultra light. this fish felt like a monster, but that was expected with this rod, we were into fish that ranged from 4 to 7 pounds when this fish hit the surface, oh my was it huge...my heart stopped, but my mouth didn't....I simply said to joe..."Joe...Give your dad the net"......the words were not needed, Joe had seen the fish as well, and had already handed the net to dad... turned out to be 10 pounds 4 oz's. not a bad eye!!!!!!!

the fish was taken to the taxidermist, and placed on my wall with the ultra light set up.....yup...retired the rod. and now days Joe even nets his own fish, quite the fisherman he has become!!!

Great story CC.

Hopefully, one day, in the not too distant future, I'll net that ten puonder for myself, too.
I can only be content for now with my wee 7.8 er.

Yaknow , one time I was with a bud from work & I spanked a big 'un off for him with the net...
I told him to go ahead & toss me into the Kawkawlin... but he didn't..
Thinkin' back , he never backed away from the gunnel to let me in & I think the dang net was kinda small for a 10-11 LB wallY ennyhoo...
Actually she wouldn't fit too swell & when she flopped the wrong way , the #9 crawbug Shadrap hung on the rim of the net...... Only problem was - the stinkin' wallY didn't hang with that Shad Rap !!!!

lol thats not as bad as what I did to a bud of mine this last salmon run. finally got him to give the salmon a try.....and as with the rest of us, once ya hook that first one, you yourself ARE HOOKED! well, he hooked his first, I stabbed it with the net, (my headlight ran outta charge...nettin' in the dark) he hooked his second salmon....I stabbed it with the net...he hooked his third one....yup....I STABBED IT WITH THE NET! AFTER KNOCKIN' OFF EVERY THING HE HOOKED....LOL...HE'S STILL MY BUD... but now brings extra light when night fishing! wish we had time to day fish together!

Hey creekchub i'll bite... started handlining a few years back and have a favorite spot where a plant puts out warm water discharge. brought my boat in really tight 15 FOW or so and bang another biggin. brought her up along side of the boat a few times and figured i wouldn't be flipping this in over the side. had to work my way up to the front of my boat to grab the net with my line in the other hand. brought her in and sized her up. a little over 30" and just tipped my scale at 10 pounds even... i gave her a kiss, snapped a photo and released her back to the river...i know a lot of guys don't consider handlining "real fishing" without the pole and all..and i felt the same way for years so i never tried it as well.. but i have to tell you bringing them in by hand with your arm as the pole is quite a rush....i remember my first night out with my buddy in his boat and i in mine..he told me how to do it and it seem to come naturally...would you believe i had my limit in few hours and have been hooked ever since...

I got my first 10# fish so many years ago I forgot.
I started walleye fishing the St.Clair river from shore in the mid 70s.
I do remember one fish quite well though.
It was 2:30am I had fished everywhere I knew on a hot summer night..no fish.
I tried a spot in Marysville aand hooked a fish, after what seemed forever I landed a whopper. Went home with the fish and measured it at 32".
It was a fat one too.
All that on a twister jig and 6# test.
I'll never know just exactly what it weighed.
Back then we ate all the fish we caught.

I caught my biggin about 30 years ago. Was fishing with my dad in the same spot I fish today. Don't really know how much it weighted but it went from the nose touching one corner of the old Coleman cooler to the tail wrapped in the opposite corner. The pole (5') is as limber as a broom stick was bending real good. I would guess it went over 10 lbs., anyway my arms felt like it did at the time. That was my first and last real big one that made it into the boat............ Bob

GOOD one Trout...
I myself no longer use anything heavier than 6LB anymore WHATEVER I fish for...
4 sizes of line used here... 1,2,4 & 6 LB...
Nothing heavier.... It's that silly faith thing I guess!!!! of course 10 foot steely rods for darn near everything has a little to do with it!!!! I LOVE 10" BULL 'GILLS ON STEELY RODS!!!
hmmm.. I digress.....
:D
you said ~~~
"Back then we ate all the fish we caught."
Did you guys use a straight razor to get the taste of that fish off your tongues ???
EEEEEWWW!!!

About 6 years ago I got into fishing. I had a very good teacher showing me all the ropes. He took me to the St. Clair River in May. Hooked the big one right when we started fishing. My buddy almost went swimming trying to net it off from the rocks. This was the 3rd Wally I had ever caught. Talk about lucky.:D

After the commercial/ sport fishing ban in the 70's, no one looked twice at a 10# 'Eye out of LSC. Had to be at least 14# to get any attention.

it was my 4th year of serious eye fishing we were in the saginaw river.we were catching fish when i hooked into a 10.4 lber the flat bottom i used to fish out of only had about 8 in above the water i was useing a5ft light rod so my partner to come right back in the corner of the boat to net for me when he did we would take on water so we really had to time it right.what a blast. about 20 min later i hooked the 11.12 lber on my wall and it was the same routine to net it as the first big one.

I got my first 10 pounder about 7 years ago on the Trenton Channel. It was the first season I started jigging there. A friend told me how good the walleye fishing was that time of year, so me and my brother gave it a try. I had a 19 foot cuddy cabin boat so we couldn't control the boat to get a good vertical jig, so we were at the mercy of drifting with the current. I had to use a 3/4 oz jig just to hit the bottom. Drifting along and thought I got hung up, I started reefing on my line when I noticed it was going against the current. I told my brother I wasn't hung up that it was something heavy. Got it up to the surface and my brother missed it with the net. He hit it on the nose and it took another run. We both saw it was a huge fish. After a couple of more minutes playing it out we got it in the boat. Before we weighed it, I told Steve if it is over 10pds it goes on the wall. I got out my digital scale and it weighed in at 10pds 3oz, 31 inches long. Now I stare at it everytime I go in my living room.

Many many years ago my father took me Muskie trolling on LSC. We were at the Delphine Channel and I was using a silver spoon about 7 in. long. Back then LSC was not the Muskie fishery that it is now and I had never caught one. My rod tip went down and the drag was letting out line. Finally, my 1st Muskie! I played the fish and finally got it to the boat. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was a big fish alright but it wasn't a Muskie. It was the biggest Walleye I had ever seen (of course I was only about 10 years old). My dad talked me into releasing it (something I really didn't want to do) and told me I would catch more like that. I don't remember weighing or measuring it but he said it was 11 lbs. and by the time he passed away, after years of telling the story, it had grown to be a 13 lber. And yes, he was right about me catching more fish like that but he forgot to mention that it might take 25 years!

I've been fortunate enough to have caught several 10lb plus fish in my life (thanks to dad for getting me started at an early age;) )

I have (2) that really stand out though:

The first was a brown that I landed with my dad out on the big lake. We went out with a buddy of his as he bragged about how is kid (me) could catch fish in a mud puddle (have always been lucky that way). I had been on the big pond several times before, as my dad used to have a boat. Just shortly after I got the lines all set, (these guys used to work me like a dog!), we had a fish. They said since I had done all the work, I could have the first fish, so the fight was on. From the way the fight was going, it felt like a nice king. Everyone else had the same thought in mind. It wasn't until the fish was brought close to the boat that I noticed it was not a king, but a VERY large brown. You should have seen these guys. They were jumping all over the place jockeying for position to scoop it with the net. It was hillarious! My dad finally scooped it and when it was all said and done, we had boated a beautiful 14lb brown. What a gorgeous fish. Unfortunately, the fish never made it to my wall. My dad had the fish in his chest freezer in the basement. Something happened with the motor and everything in the freezer spoiled! Major bummer, but at least we still have a few picture and a great memory.

The second big fish that stands out is a walleye I caught while steelie fishing. It was a couple of years ago, again fishing with the ol'man, and the eyes had made their run up the river earlier than usual. We were fishing a run which always held a decent number of steel, when I had a take on my nuke/nymph combo while fishing w/the fly rod. I thought I foul hooked the fish at first because it just sat on the bottom. Finally, I decided to just lay the wood to him and either get him up or break him off. The fish came off the bottom and just slowly moved down stream (water was still pretty cold). I still didn't know what I had, but I was pretty sure it wasn't a steelie. My dad was fishing a short ways downstream, so I yelled to him to net the fish for me if it came his way. A few seconds later, the fish came to the surface right at my dads feet and drifted right into his net (couldn't have planned that any better!). I slowly walked down to dad and a few of my buddies that were with us only to find a 14lb+ eye hooked right in the chops on an olive nymph. Unbelievable! One of my buddies took it home and was going to have it mounted (season was still open). Not sure if he ever mounted that fish or not? Have some nice photo's though.

Well, I didn't mean to write a book, but these were two stories that I just wanted to share with you all.

Happy Hookin!!!

:) Ive had some great times on Lake Erie in the past 10 years. My 3 biggest walleye were 31 1/2", 30", and 28 inches. The 28" was my first large walleye and was hooked kind of bad, so I kept it and ate it. I found out the hard way that large Walleyes are poor table fare. Now I try to be as carefull as I can handeling the big ones in order to reliese them. I reliese all Walleyes over 22", my favorite are the small ones. Thats NOT Gary Roach in that Lund, thats Me;)

Saturday April 6, 2002. We made it out to Erie and had lines in the water by 7 am. We were trolling in 12 fow and I was up. We had landed 2 fish and within munutes the board dropped back. It was a smaller fish and shook off 15' behind the boat. A few minutes later an inside board went back hard. I applied steady pressure and the fish dropped back behind the boat pointing straight up in the air. I gained over time and we removed the board. It was nose down in chalky water when the weight showed and we prepared the net. At first glance of the fish my buddy expertly had the net aroung the fish. It was 31" and went 11 lbs on our scale. It took me 30 minutes to calm down and was the best walleye trip imaginable. Here is a photo of her.:D http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/user_gallery/STEINFISHSKI/11lb5x7.jpg
This one is in my freezer to be mounted. :D
