Consider the source, it is just as likely to be BS, more then likely, then a true report.

Last night I just checked my lake (Tipsico Lake) and it was frozen about 75 yards out with about one inch thick near the shore.

Chilson pond in brighton has ice, walked out with the spud this morning and there is about 2 1/2 inches of good ice. I may go out tommarow and fish it in the am. That's at the brighton rec area !The lake is shallow and in a valley, It always freezes fast. All other lakes in the area are wide open, They will be a while most likely after the holidays if we get some long term cold weather :fish:

I am starting to think this year's a wash:mad: The 10 day forecast continues to stay warm with no real cold day time temps.

The accu weather 15 day forecast looks worst !

Yeah, this is not looking good! The outlook for January according to a local metorologist is saying that all of January is going to be above normal temps and below normal precip. :(

I went by Kent Lake this afternoon and 50 percent of the back bays had 1/2 inch of ice and the rest was getting skim ice due to no wind as I was leaving.
The west basin was still open but thats usually a big void anyways.
Wild Wing Lake in the park was totally iced over but still only a half inch.
Going down to 12 tonight and no wind!
The lakes need to lock in tonight and tommorrow before Thursdays
wind gets here!
If the ice gods are good I think Sunday afternoon will be my first time
out.

Stll waiting patiently..:xzicon_sm

Portage lake in Pinckney is completly locked as of today. Yesterday it was wide open. No skim ice it looks solid. My fovorite spot should be walkable by this weekend (mouth of the canel) if the temps stay cold and the sun and snow stay away. Accu weather looks good for the rest of the month.

Also Brighton recreation lakes, Bishop lake, Chilson pond are also locked and making ice. Maybe this year won't be a wash but time and temps will tell. I'm heading out towards Pinckney rec area to check out more lakes. getting pumped up and hoping this will last a while (I wanna fish):dizzy: Time to finaly prep the ice fishin gear :D

Just got back from silver lake in Pinckney and that too is ice locked. I believe all the lakes are now locked so we should finaly be fishing somewhere this weekend. Friday I will break out the spud and get some ice thickness.

I know everyone is getting antsy to be on the ice but I have to throw out a few words of caution here.
I checked a number of Livingston County lakes this morning and my 57 years fishing this area tells me that we'll be darn lucky if there's much ice fishing at all this weekend and I'd put my money on not.
All of the lakes I checked which included Chemung, Woodland, Appleton, Bishop, Chilson Pond, Shanango, Big and Little Portage and Silver Lake in Pinckney are barely covered with open spots on all of them.
Chilson sb fishable by Sunday with caution as will some of the canals on other lakes.
However, this is NOT first ice as we would have during a normal fall/winter cycle. Granted, its the first ice of the year but this year is very different. We've had a lot a warm weather and rain which has kept the water temps much higher than normal. A week of nights like last night will produce good ice but realistically speaking, any lake with decent water depths is gonna take a while to chill down and sustain consistent ice thicknesses.
There will be fishing on shallow lakes and canals but deeper lakes will be peppered with thin spots.
In short, if you don't know a lake extremely well, use extreme caution or better yet, give it another week.

Good advice Walleyechaser. Not only is this not our normal first ice with the warmer water, the days are getting longer (unlike normal first ice) .If you think about it most people have there permanent shanties off the ice by mid Feb. Use your spud and good luck.

2 p.m. today - North shore - Across from Bangkok Chinese Restaurant - Right there where they are remodeling that bar.

One spud whack drove through the ice - 1" of ice. There was some open water on the east side of the lake but it was some 200 yards off the shoreline. Should close up all the way in the next 48 hours. If accuweather is....uh....accurate.....is should be safe by Wednesday of next week.

Ok Ok walleyechaser so i'm getting a little excited. I won't go out until ice is at least 3 plus inches. Drove around portage again today No sign of open water except around bridges that never freeze. Hopefully this warm up today and the winds over the next few days won't rip open the ice.

I hope to be fishing the canel soon but won't atempting until sunday or even next week as temp start to fall again. Last year the main lake never locked but we were able to fish the mouth of the canel.

Took the spud out on the canel on Portage Lake, Ice is maybe 2 inches at best. One good wack and your through the ice. Maybe next week sometime before I think about fishing anywhere in Livingston county. Better safe then cold and wet or worst!

Has anyone checked any of the lakes in the Clarkston,Waterford area? I might go check Pontiac Lk. today. I'll post my findings. Just got through respooling all my reels and as soon as there is some safe ice I'll be fishing. I'll be introducing my wife to be to the wonderful world of icefishing this year as long as we get enough ice for her to feel comfortable. Any suggestions on where to take a first timer? She has only been fishing maybe a couple of times when she was a kid and I just want to take her somewhere safe where we can catch some panfish.

Just got back from Pontiac Lk. and it still needs a few cold nights. The beach in the rec area had about 1-1.5". I walked out on the fishing dock, poked a few holes and it was about the same. The little cove where the boat launch is had 2-2.5" where I checked. I could see footprints where someone went out further and drilled some holes but I weigh around 280 and I was by myself so I did not venture out there.

I'd give it until next weekend if you really want to be safe.
Most if not all the lakes around here have only been covered since Tuesday night/Wednesday morning.
The weather is supposed to stay cold and it will be good next weekend. There will be guys out this weekend, but I bet some will get wet too.

a friend and I went out last night and I got 3 gills and a small bass. we didn't get off the shallow weedy flat to the deep water where most of the fish are, but there was just over 2 inches of ice everywhere I walked(very slowly spudding every 15 feet or so). I could see that the deeper water had not been frozen as long as the flat we were on, so I didn't venture too close to the frozen "slush ridge" that was on the drop-off, but with 15 degrees tonight, we plan to hit in the am and catch some gills. yummm:corkysm55 of course, if I find less than 2" on the deep water, I'll probably just stay in shallow. good luck guys and be safe. the fish sure aint worth dying for.

I checked Island lake and Kent Lake this afternoon.

No signs of anyone fishing either but I seen snowmobile tracks going all the way across Island Lake and coming back to the beech area.
I drilled a couple holes out next to SB tracks and by dock and best I could come up with was a tad over 2 inches with a tape. WOW!

I checked a couple spots at Kent in the shallow bays and came up with 2 and 3 inches with a tape at a couple different parts of the lake.
I'll give it a few more days before I feel comfortable with it.

Wamplers 3-4 the ice still looks great.....14 inches. Be careful though in the channel near Jerry's. I put my trailer through slush to the water on one side at the mouth. What a pain getting everything off and jockeying it out of there (by hand, my 2wd atv wouldn't budge it!). The water is shallow was but taller than my boots. Fishing was slow, wind blew hard and made me just sit and wait, not that I ever move much anyhow.

Tom was that you going out of Jerry's as I was coming in around noonish (I had the camo Outty, tan jeep)?

If it was, sorry I forgot to mention to take the "land route" rather than the channel mouth! I was kinda wondering about the guy that I saw loading up in the channel once I was a few miles down the road... I went over to Clarks and did about the same there as Wamplers. Lots o' dinkus.

Fished Devils Lake yesterday at least 14" of ice and there were vehicles out on it. We started off Sandy Beach and then moved back to near the Public Access area. Marked a TON of fish but couldn't get them to buy what we were sellin...at least with any size. Not alot of folks out there while we were there. There was a TON of standing water on top of the ice it would just flow into your hole making foam.

Made the tour today.

Started in Hillsdale on Baw Beese, 10"-15" of solid ice everywhere I drilled.

Moved to Wamplers 13" everywhere I tried, however someone did go through yesterday at the mouth of the channel by Jerry's.

Ended at Clark, 10"-12".

Only about 3/4" of slush on top of the ice in the afternoon.

Lot's of holes drilled, lots of lures soaked, think I got a sunburn and came home w/about a dozen keeper gills for my efforts.
