Good morning fellow ice fishers!

I thought I would give a brief update on some ice conditions. I checked a small, 30 acre, 15 feet deep lake last night before dark. Spudding from shore it took me 4 hard hits to go through with the spud. Determining it will hold my 210lbs, I ventured out about 15 feet and started to hear cracking! Two hits with the spud and it was through! Damn good thing I had a rope around my wrist otherwise I would have to buy a new spud!! Being it's about 5 degrees outside here right now, I have to believe it's getting safer. Thickness was about 2.5" near shore, and 1" 15 feet out from shore. The snow on top doesn't help matters any. After I left that lake, I went to another local lake to check that and doing the same procedure as above, I found the same thing. 2.5" near shore, 1.5" out about 25-20 feet. I'm as anxious as all of you, but perhaps in between muzzleloading hunts this weekend, I'll be able to get out after some pike/gills/perch and update later. I fish this area heavily and if anyone needs advice, etc. just send me a pm. Great luck to you all this winter and BE SAFE!!!

Lewiston is real close to Fletchers and Im headed up there for the Christmas holidays and thought about trying twin lakes as well as some others in the local area. Fletchers is great fun but has no Eyes. Any suggestions for some eyes in the area? I hear beaver lake has some.

fishcrazy,

Beaver lake does have 'eyes. I've never fished it so I couldn't tell you about that lake. The Twins are good also for eyes and perch. Send me a pm as it gets closer to when you come up and I'll update you on ice and fishing conditions. I'm not a fan of describing lakes and specifics on the "forum". Our fishery is delicate and I've seen first hand how a lake can go from great, to crap in a matter of two years because of overfishing. Had a 'gill lake that consistently produced 11"+ 'gills. Word got out and last year, you couldn't even get a parking spot at this lake and two years before, you never saw anyone out there.

Thanks for the info, on my way up Friday night. Already had the hard water gear in the truck, guess I'll be pulling it out. Sent you a pm.
