Fished the Rifle on Thursday. Started approximately 7am with a bright, warm sun. By 7:15 the clouds and bitter cold wind had taken over for the remainder of the day. Fished hex nymphs, egg flies, and spawn and unfortunately didnt hook any steelhead, nor did we see any. However we managed to catch approximately 6 or 7 walleye on chartruse egg flies. They varied from 3 to 5 lbs, with one being a 5lber easily! Managed to get only one small rainbow (14 inches) on spawn which was immediately released. I dont know what we saw more of throughout this day: suckers or empty beer cans on the bottom of the river. Maybe it would be worthwile to get a group of people with some 5 ft long pokers and pull as many empties out of the river, followed by a cookout and some cocktails afterwords.
