I get the chance every christmas to fish the ice at Fletchers and always have a blast. IWe have always tried to find the river channel but never had any luck at locating a drop off ledge that would indicate that we found it. Is it still there or has it been silted in? We must have poped 50 holes last year looking for it. Any signs that ice has started to make on Fletchers yet?

No ice here yet it is 50 degrees today. This weekend temps are supposed to be in the low 20s at night and around 30-35 during the day. Hopefully start icing up soon.

Anyone around the area know if its getting started yet? Getting down right cold up there. Seems like there should be some ice starting. Any thoughts as to whether it may be first ice by christmas?

well umm I guess you dont know the answer to the question and since you posed your answer with a ?? at the end of it I am guessing that you are soliciting a response from me on this? Sooooo here ya go.

well ummm I saw that bullydog from Alpena said that there was no ice on the 28th of November. It is now the 5th of December. Time has passed. Temps have droped. Snow has fallen. Things change? I live 15 hours away. bullydog also said "Hopefully start icing up soon." I guess in your opinion I should just quietly stay in my place and wait for a reply? Am I oversteping my bounds here in asking for an updated on the conditions of the ice. I am very sorry to have offended you so. Will you ever find it in yourself to forgive me? Well I dont see the relavance of your reply but these were just a few things that came to mind. Maybe you would like to impart some first hand knowledge to the question since you obviously want to be so helpful.

Sorry for the rant but what was that reply all about. The temps have dropped in the Alpena area quite a bit since bullydog last replied and I have heard as recently as yesterday from someone who had laid eyes on Fletchers that the snow was sitting on the lake. Must be some amount of ice holdin it. well umm What ya think phantastickfish? did I answer whatever question it is that you were posing to me?

Hey guys were all gettin a little antsy waiting for good ice. Heck, I went out on a shallow pond behind my brothers house last night (Flint Area) and got a good soaker going through about 1/2in in 3ft of water 10' from shore. His dumb***** dog then proceded to run all over the pond slipping and falling all over the place. I thought for sure I was going to have to drag his butt out. It was kinda funny though. We'll try and keep everyone posted on the ice conditions when we can. I wouldn't drive 15hrs unless there was GREAT ice and lotsa fish being caught to boot!

I am going to try and check out by Jacks either tomorrow or Friday morning. I know Long Lake north of Alpena has a good skim on it.

As far as temps go it was 12 degrees here last night and never got above 30 today. Supposed to be in the teens the next couple of nights.

I have Friday off so I will be able to check out a few spots then. If I find good ice I am going to drop a line or 2.

Talked to someone last night that said Fletchers was iced over and he walked on it a bit but said it seemed a bit thin. Usually when we fish it around Christmas time there is anywhere from 4 to 6 inches of ice. Seems like a little bit of a late start this year though. I have no idea how fast ice makes but it seems that the conditions are right for making some ice up there.

Hey Fishcrazy, Update your profile to include your general location. That way folks will know what your sayin when you say "Up There" Plus it helps sometimes if folks are gettin together for an outing they know where your from and all that!
Good Luck!

Not sure this will help guys, but there was snowmobile tracks on the cuts of squaw bay, just south of Alpena. I heard that one of the guys from work fished black bass bay on Grand lake today. Hope this helps!

This is right where an old RR grade crosses the river channel. Watch the ice, it can get iffy there because of current.

Yeah, Black Bass Bay was always the first place we hit every winter. Of course the water is only 4 feet deep. And the other problem is I don't think I ever caught a perch in there over 6" long! But, it got the ice fishing fix outta the system!

Did'nt make it to Fletchers spent the weekend fishing Grand Lake. Did excellent on Perch. If there is ice on Fletchers it won't be there long.

It was about 40 today. A friend of mine fished Fletchers this weekend and he said there was 3 inches or so of ice. I went back to Grand Lake today and did'nt do worth a hoot. I might go to Fletchers tomorrow.
