I have had a few bluebird boxes out the last few years. I see the bluebirds in the spring checking out the boxes, but the sparrows seem to always take over. I did have a pair of tree swallows nest in one of the boxes last year. Not too fond of the English immigrants (aka sparrows). Does anyone know of a way to discourage the sparrows from nesting and encourage the bluebirds? The boxes are set on the edge of an area where I planted with some white pine seedlings, about an acre or so. The grasses get tall in there, and I knock it down a few times a year between rows to benefit the seedlings. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Urban sprawl has eliminated that option over the past few years in the area of the boxes, now have a new house down range, not even a safe option with my pellet gun. I do use the practice where I can do it safely.

I have had bluebird boxes out for years and have had great success. Have not had a problem with sparrows. Suggest that you make certain hole is 1 1/2 inch diameter. I place two boxes on separate poles 5 to 15 yards apart. The tree swallows will some times replace the bluebird nests or drive them out. By placing two there's room for both and they can co-exist without problem. The nest boxes should be in the open. Don't locate them close to a tree line or shrubs. There are some good books around on bluebirds. Good luck.
