Has anyone hunted either of these places since deer season started? Are there many people showing up for the morning hunts? Is anyone doing any good? I'm thinking about heading out in the morning and can't decide which one I want to go to. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated, pm's welcome!
Thanks in advance

Hunted Fish point on the deer opener for the am hunt, drew first out of only 9 parties. Got right next to the refuge and nothing was coming out of that refuge because the wind wasnt strong enough and the weather was not nearly cold enough. We are going to have to have some extreme conditions to get the ducks out of there.
P.S. There are actually tons of birds in the refuge, but they wont fly outside the refuge until we do get that extreme weather.

As Franky said there were 9 parties for the 15th AM, 23 for the 16th AM and this past Saturday there were 18 (Or 16 I forget). Thursday was absolutely phenomenal with many shots all around. Saturday was the calmest day I can remember and we could'nt buy a bird!:( I'm probably done with Fish Point for the year, but if we get some good North winds next week I might change my mind.

Hunted FP yesterday afternoon (18th). 19 parties in the morning, 15 parties in the afternoon. Hardly any shooting anywhere all afternoon. The ducks didn't leave the refuge in mass until ~ 30 minutes after shooting hours had ended.

Hunted FP (11/19) AM.
15 Parties, due 14th
Had light flurries for weather/wind N/NE
Shot five Mallards & one goose.
Lot's of birds there and will be until the freeze.
I can't believe they are over the 8,200 mark in ducks killed!

HEY HEY HEY! Who's the one who pimped Mike L. and I out the day we all hunted by not calling me on the cell to tell us that your plans had changed and you were heading to your private honey hole? Not like I wasn't out there trying. And I still have yet to get into them good out of Sebewaing. Been out there 6 times now and getting a few each time, but all I can say is i've had plenty of time at Sebewaing to work the bugs out of that boat blind we built  I've actually been to Shiawassee more times this year than I have in the last 10 :yikes: And from the looks of things, you've converted to field hunting for everything

Hmmmm ! My memory might be failing me ? (Age thing) But I'm quite sure a certain Party....Way Younger certain party group. Did not fair well in the a.m. bingo draw. And two distinguished, experianced hunters who did not draw well, still went out and gave it there best and did Not get skunked. Only too find out later this younger party, who will not be mentioned, went to a mallard town meeting and had a three man limit by 9:30 a.m..........Oh the pain, too think we put our sincerest trust in our fellow hunters to get jilted like this ? Oh how it hurts........ But ? We will survive to hunt another day. Hang in there ducky sebewing will reward you.......:)

Just think how many there would be if EVERYONE actually wrote down what they shot. Heck I bet they would be over the 10,000 mark.
As far as when JD and Mike came up....Kev I cant believe you did that to them.:evilsmile

ya, shiawassee surpassed last seasons mark by end of october......and they are semi-acurrate here as they delay posting kills be a week or more (can't remember exact delay). Since inputting the delay alot of hunters (old schoolers) I know loosened up and started reporting accurately.
Only thing that i know some hunters don't like doing is reporting goose kills fearing we will reach quota early so that quota system is whack.

NQP today few hunters and few ducks but everyone scratched out something.
I was very disappointed by the guy down the row from me. His first duck I passed on because it was a hen mallard. His second duck was a glider and ended up on the ice out from me. Hen mallard. His third duck also swung by me and was, YOU GUESSED IT, hen mallard. I was carrying my binocs today and there is no doubt about the bag. His last shot was apparently quite long because some other hunters let out a shout. At the landing he was a bit of a pr---k and called the other guys whiners. Said he should go back to shiawassee. Is that the kind of stuff that is going on down there and if so why are hunters putting up with it? If we don't police our own and get down on them for violating who will stand up for us come the anti-duck hunter vote? We need to put a stop to this crap posthaste!
Still ticked off!

Yeah pretty rotten of him, huh? :evilsmile And as far as you son, I guess I'm gonna have to rope your butt into riding in my boat some day to show me your guys honey hole out of Sebewaing, because for the life of me I still can't find all of those redheads that you guys talk about. Thought we were on the "X" last Saturday, and there were only a couple other groups out there (deer hunting I guess), but we only had one small flock of redheads come around, which we proceeded to whiff cleanly on :help: Managed to fool one greenhead into comitting suicide though, so Kev's blind he designed for the boat works well....I can give him credit for that anyway

Yeah you're right Mike. You'd think these young whippersnappers would've invited us old-timers along...afterall, we don't have too many years left in us

I can tell you Kid that I put my birds down, but like you said the (old schoolers) they wont especially when there's 120 party's and everyone is looking at the charts frantically writing down where the hot fields are like their taking their SAT's. If you ask me that is the one thing that has to go, my god do you want em to shoot em for ya too? ;)

ya, all the hunters here are hen killers and fish point guys are angels...... If you seen this guy overlimit on hens, why did you not call RAP line? Why are YOU putting up with it, and expecting someone else to take care of the problem?
I can only think of specific group (would love to ship them off to fish point, lol) that hunts shiawassee that fits your profile and i wish they would be singled out and made an example of. I've hunted damn near every day possible this year except 10 days i spent in ND....and have never been checked this year. Michigan CO's must be on the endangered species list.
we had 9 parties this morning, probably 15 birds shot on whole area....10 of those birds were shot in 1 field. Everybody shot decent and let birds work the way they wanted.

It's bad...I can tell ya that it's bad. And right now the DNR is concentrating on deer. When I checked my buck at the DNR station Wednesday, he admitted that the high-profile game like deer are getting all of the effort. Seems that we waterfowlers take a back seat to most everything, including snowmobiling and cross country skiing  WHY? Because of the almighty $$$$$. We spend our money alright, but we do it with Cabela's, Mack's, Gander, etc. Deer hunters and snowmobilers spend it in the local bars/restaurants, motels, etc. Just a fact...we don't rate very high on the priority list.

I sure am taking a beating on this thread for making a little joke... :hide:
I'm waiting for Stacemo to jump in and tell you how we had to pack all our gear into the field like dogs. Then we didn't even know if it would produce. As luck would have it, BINGO!!! :D
JD glad to hear your blind worked out well for you. Having to work the weekends really limited my ability to get out with ya. You need to camp next to me and spend a week with us.... We will have a good old time. :evilsmile

So who they calling young ? Me? Kev made me shoot all of the long ducks (20 yds). You think it was a picnic! Pressure! Don't miss with the young guys. Hauling 300 lbs of gear out in to the field. I had to make two trips on the way in! Slippery mud. Rain down your neck. Greenheads in your face. It was just awful!

I was not checked once last year, and was out nearly 40 times. This year, I've not been out as much..but haven't even seen a CO. I know this is not the main subject of the thread, but I wanted to respond to that post to agree.

In retrospect I agree with you and Rap is now programed into my cell. My oversight for sure. I sure wasn't trying to imply that Shi guys or pointers are bad, that is for sure. I only hunt a managed area a couple or three times a year and am glad they are there for those that love them. I spend my time elsewhere and am shocked at that guys attitude mostly because I don't run into many other hunters.

Kev,
WAAAAY ahead of ya. Been working on a buddy really hard who has a trailer trying to get him to drag it up to either your side, or over at Hoyles or somewhere on the west side. Told him I'd even pay the rent. So far, he's not cooperating  But I'd love to have something up there to stay in. I'll be honest with you all...the bingo's have gotten old for me, whether we shoot birds or not. I really have been bitten by the big water bug, and divers. So next year I plan on doing a lot more of that, and staying at your spot there would be great. I'm gonna try to do more hunting in late October when maybe there's still some birds to shoot at  Problem is the ND trip takes up some of October, and usually when I get back home I have lots to catch up on. So it's usually the last week of October before I can even get geared up here. Oh well...lot's of time to plan for next season now.
