9 times out of ten,,, i expect less from the pup then the owner. most pups are only too happy to please you. you have to learn how to comunicate what you want to the dog. this is why in my oppinion dog training classes,, are named wrong. it should be dog owner training classes.
i would sugjest you do a web search on clicker training. study it a bit and try it out. if you follow it correctly you can quickly teach your dog what it is you want them to do.

john.i personally do not have any problems with my pup or training her.
this post is what i am seeing from other forums and some ill witted owners.
FYI i expect my young dog now (23 weeks )is to be house broke, listening 50% of the time, stay out of the garbage can, annoy my wife and be a pup.
in another 6 or 7 weeks the real work begins.

nothing... no need to rush your dog.. if you want a dog that can hunt right away buy a finished dog.

Lets see, where to begin... Oh NO another one of Roosters long winded post ....
Take a 23 week old pup and stand right infront of a crate and tell him "Kennel" and he will most likely Kennel, that is if he somewhat knows what the command means. Some would say the pup knows the kennel command. Now walk 20 YARDS away from the kennel and tell pup to kennel and he would not have a clue. Another for instance take a young pup and teach him to hup or to whoa on a table in the garage or on a whoa board. Now take pup to the field and cut him loose and tell him to whoa or hup and that would be the last thing on his mind. It is about the same as taking a pup that has never heard gun fire to a field and firing off a round and Expecting it to start looking for a downed bird.
Everything for pup is based on building blocks. The start has to be at home with yard drills and then transfered to the fields. For instance sitting and staying for a few seconds, then for a minute and then for several minutes. This alone might take a week to be consistant or more depending on the pup and the pups age and breeding. Then introduce a distraction by tossing a training bumper, Opps, pup broke on the toss, make correction. Several sessions later and he has it, maybe a day or two or just one afternoon. Now toss it and pop the starter pistol, oppps only after pup has had proper introduction to gunfire. Ok, pup broke on the shot, correction made and ya take it from the top and toss it again. Ok, several weeks later pup is fine with sitting, staying while tossing a training bumper and a stater pistol. Now build a makeshift blind and take it from the top, sit and stay for several minutes. Ok, pup is doing that now toss a bumper and pop the gun. Oppps, new situation for pup, make the same correction as before and pup will start to understand the situation he is in. Ok pup is doing great. He will sit and stay during all of this. Now take him around the corner of the house and tell him to sit and stay, walk 10 feet away from him and toss the bumper and pop the gun. Pup will break and tear after it, go to him and make the same correction. Pup will see the picture and will hold the next time. Take him up to the school and have him walking at heel, tell him to whoa or hup and toss the bumper and pop the gun, pup might break, new location but a correction and he will again see the picture you are painting. Ok pup will do this anywhere for ya. Go back to ground zero and use a thawed bird. Pup might not break the first time, but odds are he will on the second one after he has had that bird in his mouth. Ok, pup is doign great on thawed birds. Now use a wing clipped live birds, BINGO, pup will be breaking on the next 5 birds after that, stick to your routine and make your corrections. DONT get MAD, nice calm corrections, pup will understand if the corrections are the same. Yahoo, pup is doing great. Take pup to a lake and walk him at heel and then have him sit at the waters edge, toss the bumper and pop the gun, this is ofcourse if he has been in the water already, and make correction if needed. Oh, when pup does things right, praise him up good.
Ya see the building blocks developing ??? You are developing your dog into a gundog and what you want outta him you have to TEACH it to him. To teach a dog boat manors, line manors and to be steady takes time and effort on your part. This can all be done with 10 minutes of work a day, sometimes LESS.
Once you think you are where ya wanna be, take your dog down to a lake with ducks on it and tell him to SIT(sit means stay) walk away untill your out of sight and fire a gun, if he breaks while your outta sight you need to do more work. Sit your dog in a boat or a canoe and leave and fire a gun, if he raises his rump you need to work on this more. Go for a float on a nice calm lake in your canoe and have a small rubber mat for the pooch to sit on and tell him to SIT, his butt should remain there the whole time.
Bottom line is when folks think they have control of their dog at home 99% of the time they dont have control while in the fields or the marsh. It all needs to be transfered to the specific situation.
Oh, back to the topic
"so here the Q what do you expect from your pups."
I guess that could be turned around and asked ??? what does pup expect from you ???
Once you have taught a pup how to LEARN the possibilities are endless...................................
Turn time on your rump into time for PUP. I owe my pups that....
Just my $0.02, now I'm broke...
