Im mounting my own deer and I capped out the hide from the head and fleshed the eyes, ears, nose, and I split the lips already. I put some salt on the hide for now a nd placed it in the fridge. Does anyone know what I should do for the next step? Im going to start fleshing the hide I believe but what do I do with salt on the hide? Wipe it off first?

Im just trying this to see if I can do it myself. Seems to not be to hard. My neighbor is helping me, he did 2 others himself and look very nice.

Help please

A very brief sequence is like this: Cape the head, flesh the whole cape, salt and drain, salt again, rinse all salt, pickle cape, shave cape, tan cape, mount, allow mount to dry, paint and finish mount.

Move this thread to the taxiderrmy forum.

Pull the hide out of the fridge, create an incline for the hide to lay on that will allow the water to drain as the salt works. After a day, shake the loose salt off, resalt.

Obtain tanning information.

taxidermy.net search forums and read till you are blue in the face. This subject is covered on that site many many times. If I was you I would rinse it out good in water to get the salt off it and then towel it off good and freeze (it wont freeze with salt on the cape)it untill you have a good idea on where to begin or have the neighbor sit with you till you have it all rough fleshed and then salt for 24hr shake off and salt again shake it off then let it air dry till you are ready to mount.

good luck and have fun with it.
