Report:I had good friday off from work so me and buddy hit the old ausable. I usally fish with spinning gear but I have been just getting into flyfishing for steelhead so of course I had to try it. My buddy was fishing this monster hole that I knew I wouldnt be able to get a good drift on. So I went up stream a ways and fished what has been pretty produtive run for me over the last few years. But I fished with the fly rod for probably only a hour I was getting frusterated so I said the h??? with it. I walked back to the truck and got out the old faithful spinning reel and rod. I went back and starting fishing with my buddy. He hadnt had any action but another guy that was fishing there did. He had caught a small male 4 pounds maybe, bright silver fresh from good ole lake huron. The nice informative gentlemen pack up and left he said was going to check on his dad a bend or so down stream and I thought his dad, this guy is probably 50 years old. So I wonder how old his dad is? But anyways I went and started fishing where he was, switch from spawn to 2 or 3 wax worms. fished a few drifts and had some hits. Finally 5 or 6 casts there he was a beautiful 10 pound 32" steely. He had been in the river for a while so the colors on him were brilliant! The reddish color from his nose to his tail was radiant. We fished untill we were out of wax worms (I only had a few left over for a couple of weeks ago). Went to Desi's had a killer omlete's and coffee. Hit the Dam Store and got some more waxes. Went to another produtive spot but there we a few guys fishing where we wanted to be. So we headed up stream. Dave found a spot to try and I continued up stream. Found a rather large hole with nobody on. I had to share my new found hole so I went and got Dave. He got there in a little, while I had been busy retying. Finding all the new snags of course. Nothing like the good ole one cast retye one cast retye. I was retying agian of course when Dave got his fish. Another spectacular show of vibrant colors a 8 lb 30" hen steely. His fish fought a little harding than mine. It did a arial flip once and was kind of a tough landing but we got the picture to prove it!All in all a good day of fishing, with a good friend, with a good breakfeast, on a good friday!

Riverboy-

Welcome to the site. This was the first post of yours that I had the pleasure to read. Sounds like you had a good time and made the best of your situation. I think steelheading is a excellent character builder, and once I have paid my dues, I hope to begin to learn a little bit about fly fishing.....

Thanks for the report.
