Well I have had a great year with lots of buck sightings, but just havent been able to close the deal. I have had BIG bucks real close but just slip out with does. I had another wide buck that I passed because a bigger buck was coming and never gave me a shot. Well Monday morning this guy showed up and I decided to take him.
The Story:
I was not planning to hunt on Monday, but to go up and move some stands since I had the morning off for conferences. Well, we all decided to hunt for the first couple of hours and then put the stands up. I got in my stand about 6:00AM and I went to a stand that NO ONE has ever shot a nice buck out of. It is a great observation stand and I wanted to see what was going on. You ever have one of those mornings that you hit every twig, make noise, and everything else. Well, everything went perfect and I slipped in that stand without a PEEP. I get settled and I heard noise all around me. Rabbits, coons, and whatever else was awake in the darkness. Then I hear something coming from the woods to my east. I finally heard deer walking my way but it was still a little low light. I could tell one was real big bodied, and one was a bit smaller. In this little patch of woods I was hunting a BIG tree fell a couple of years ago right in the center. The doe came on the North side while the buck came on the South side. I walked in on the North side and the wind was coming from the South. The doe got within 5 feet of my tree and looked right at my ladder and looked straight up, smelling my HOMEMADE scent killer and couldnt get me. BUT she knew something wasnt right. I havent even picked up my bow yet for fear of being busted. She bounds off about 30 yards into a grass field and he is just grunting up a storm, so I grab my bow quickly and turn to see the buck walking directly away from me. I look at the doe as I pull my bow back and I settle that pin right behind the bucks shoulder and pull the trigger on my relsease. I watched my luminock go into the deer and disappear. The buck ran about 35 yards and started the waggle, and tipped over. I was very happy to say the least. I know he isnt the biggest buck in the woods, but a great deer for ou area and our management. Well, we got video footage of using the scent stalker and I extracted 5 ounces of urine from the buck and extracted its tarsal glands also on film. I then got him hung up 45 minutes before my Parent Teacher Conferences started. Was a very busy day but I am very happy. I am now hunting for a big one. This deer was real LONG and I do have pictures of this deer in velvet. Enjoy!! I have better pictures being developed, but these are the best I have for now. He is a real good 2 1/2 year old, with a real big body if I had to guess.
