Well I have had a great year with lots of buck sightings, but just havent been able to close the deal. I have had BIG bucks real close but just slip out with does. I had another wide buck that I passed because a bigger buck was coming and never gave me a shot. Well Monday morning this guy showed up and I decided to take him.

The Story:

I was not planning to hunt on Monday, but to go up and move some stands since I had the morning off for conferences. Well, we all decided to hunt for the first couple of hours and then put the stands up. I got in my stand about 6:00AM and I went to a stand that NO ONE has ever shot a nice buck out of. It is a great observation stand and I wanted to see what was going on. You ever have one of those mornings that you hit every twig, make noise, and everything else. Well, everything went perfect and I slipped in that stand without a PEEP. I get settled and I heard noise all around me. Rabbits, coons, and whatever else was awake in the darkness. Then I hear something coming from the woods to my east. I finally heard deer walking my way but it was still a little low light. I could tell one was real big bodied, and one was a bit smaller. In this little patch of woods I was hunting a BIG tree fell a couple of years ago right in the center. The doe came on the North side while the buck came on the South side. I walked in on the North side and the wind was coming from the South. The doe got within 5 feet of my tree and looked right at my ladder and looked straight up, smelling my HOMEMADE scent killer and couldnt get me. BUT she knew something wasnt right. I havent even picked up my bow yet for fear of being busted. She bounds off about 30 yards into a grass field and he is just grunting up a storm, so I grab my bow quickly and turn to see the buck walking directly away from me. I look at the doe as I pull my bow back and I settle that pin right behind the bucks shoulder and pull the trigger on my relsease. I watched my luminock go into the deer and disappear. The buck ran about 35 yards and started the waggle, and tipped over. I was very happy to say the least. I know he isnt the biggest buck in the woods, but a great deer for ou area and our management. Well, we got video footage of using the scent stalker and I extracted 5 ounces of urine from the buck and extracted its tarsal glands also on film. I then got him hung up 45 minutes before my Parent Teacher Conferences started. Was a very busy day but I am very happy. I am now hunting for a big one. This deer was real LONG and I do have pictures of this deer in velvet. Enjoy!! I have better pictures being developed, but these are the best I have for now. He is a real good 2 1/2 year old, with a real big body if I had to guess.

Very nice buck. Yeah, I think it's the same look at the left brow tine, you kind of a have a twist on that and then looks a little calloused up with the velvet gone.

Hey deepwoods, they are cutting my corn today and the farmer called me to tell me the deer were in out other field like crazy. The only problem I have now is the north property I cant hunt, is about a 150 acre corn field still standing. Man I cant wait for all this corn to come down!!

I'm having some of the same trouble by me. Several hundred acres of standing corn can hide a lot of deer.

Nice job and congrats Dave. When and if you get him aged can you pass that info along? I have a tough time believing that is a 2.5 yr old.

I hear you on the corn...150 acres still standing where I'm at this year...at least all of the beans are out.

You know I am going to take the jaw in to get aged and I will report later. He was a very large deer so I guess there is a chance he is 3 1/2 but I just dont think so.

I would have had one the first week but I passed for something bigger which was walking right behind that one.

MB I always look forward to reading your posts. Damn, you sure do get some real nice bucks. If he is 2.5 he would be a monster 2 and a half year old.

Just saw the footage of the extraction of the urine off this buck and it came out flawlessly. This footage will probably be aired in 2007 on TV. I am pretty stoked. That Scent Stalker extracted 5 ounces of urine out of that deer.

I'd be willing to bet he's older, too. If not, he's got some BIG beams and brows for a 2.5 year old.

Great job.

That was fun, I have never taken a cell phone in the woods and the day I do I shoot a buck and call everyone from the stand. That was a hoot!! I hope to get his daddy soon before gun sesaon, but we will see. They cut all of our corn and there is lots of corn around us still up.

Your RIGHT!! I think I am ready for that next level of management, but with 6 other guys hunting with you that will shoot that deer EVERY time, its hard to not take him. I want to shoot 130s or better, but man its hard to pass them when I know this DARN gun season is going to pound them. If I could get the whole group to pass that buck I would be in heaven, but I dont see that happening anytime soon.

If I OWNED property I sure would. It would only take a couple of years of strict managing and we would be laying down some BRUTES!!!!

I need to get another job, teaching just doesnt pay enough!!:p ;)

As for BOW only, I agree, that would be the icing on the cake.

What is the longest tine on that deer... It looks in the pictures which we all know can be decieving to be about 7"..... I'm guessing 18-19" spread and I figured him to score 118-122..... How is his mass? I am thinking he is 3.5 myself but a darn nice buck for sure...
