will it be rain, or will we get dumped on by our first BIG snow of the season!!!!
The bubble of cold air that drops into the area behind this storm
will retreat quickly by late in the weekend as the next series of
shortwaves race across the Continental U.S. Into the area. A relatively weak
system moves into the area by around Monday...and will maintain the
mention of rain showers Monday mixing with light snow showers by
Monday night.
A much stronger system is forecast to organize in this general area
by late in the forecast...and will keep the mention of rain to end
this forecast period. This is a system that will have to be watched
closely for middle/late next week. Even though models vary greatly on
the evolution of this system as it digs through the Continental U.S....there is
increasing support that it will be a rather potent storm system and
water vapor imagery seems to lend credence to this idea as it shows
a very active string of shortwaves tracking across the northern
Pacific Ocean

Newbie question- What will a big snow storm mean for deer action? What will rain mean?

I really hope for the snow. I would much rather hunt in the snow than the rain. I think that the deer would be more likely to move in the snow.

I prefer snow also, always had good luck in the snow...+++++ easier to track a wounded animal.
Count me in for snow too, I sat out there all day last year in the cold cold rain with nothing to show.

If it had to storm I want snow. Sick of the rain and wind. Last years opener it rained and was windy most of the day and was misariable to sitin.
Yeah, let it snow, I won't get soaked like I did last year. Not much chance of snow in Washtenaw County on the 15th, however.
Corona - my guess is that it's not the snow/rain that will affect deer activity as much as it is the rain. But...on opening day it might be the amount of human activity that moves the deer. If you're in an area with a lot of hunters, stay on your stand ALL DAY. In fact, the middle of the day when guys get bored and start walking, head out to lunch and head back to the woods after lunch can be prime time since they get the deer moving. Just my $.02.
Good luck everyone, John-Ypsi

Yeah the snow really makes those little brown bodies stand out !
I'm getting the feeling that it's going to be rain, AGAIN, if anything. The temps seem to be warming here on the West side. C'mon get cold, get cooooold!!!!! I remember teh opener about 4 years ago and there was about 14" of snow on the ground. I sat so long, there was over 2"s of snow on me and the gun. A bird actually landed on the snow covered barrel.

IVE hunted in both as IM sure every one else has snow is about the best of the two choices I find the deer move realy well just before snow or rain hits Ive also sat the car waiting for the rain to stop for just a little while and seen deer movment between storms ON RAINY DAYS . SO when the rain or snow seams to slow down just a bit be on alert. they will move
good luck to everyone just my thoughts

Light powder snow would be ideal.
Heavy wet snow blows where I hunt....everything gets bent over and the deer, historically, lie low 'til it passes through.

deer tend to get out and move and feed before a good winter storm... kinda gets em freaked out watching all of their food get covered up...

As long as the winds arent trying to blow my elevated blind down, I'm happy. Rain, snow, sleet, warm, cold, ....I don't care....sitting out there hunting is what makes me happy. Although the wind is a bummer, any day out in the field sure the hell beats work!

Be careful for what you wish for. We got 18+ inches last year in the U.P. on opening night and it pretty much ruined the rest of the week. We had to bust out chainsaws just to get back into the woods to where we hunt. A few inches of snow would be great, but I'm not a big fan of a "storm". If they are talking "storms", then I would prefer rain.

I'm usually of the same mindset - let it snow. However, last year I learned a lesson in getting what you ask for.

:yikes: That's what I'm talking about. Not much fun trying to get back into your stand through that stuff, let alone trying to see anything. No thanks. I would rather get rained on.

Both increase the deer movement.

Snow, light rain, fine. But, you can have the strong winds. Absolutley hate strong wind. The forecast for my area in TC is now calling for 40% chance of rain, temps in the 40's and 15-25 mph winds. This will save alot of deer. Mother nature alwayas seems to take care of her own.

I saw some deer and passed on a couple spikes, but the hunting was really tough. We had deer moving throughout the storm, and afterwards it did change their patterns a bit. The biggest problem was getting around and being able to see, as the snow had all the trees bowed over as it was initially wet, heavy snow. It then got cold, and everything sort of froze into place. We had to cut our way in to the blinds as trees were either down or bowed over the roads, and getting back to the blinds was a chore.
Although it was a lot of work with so much snow, still hunting was was pretty easy from a noise standpoint as all that snow just absorbed sounds. I was able to sneak within 20 yards of two deer that turned out to be a nice buck and a doe, but with all the snow in the trees I couldn't tell the one was a buck until it was too late. You can get an idea of what walking through the woods was like by looking at the picture of our crapper I have above - look at the woods behind it.
The thing that drove mut nuts was that it was impossible to stay dry with all the snow dropping on you from the branches. Walking through that much snow is tough work, and no matter how slow you went and how light you dressed, you'd still get sweaty. By the time I would walk for an hour I'd be soaking wet, inside & out (that's what the sauna is for!).

Looks like the center of the low pressure "vortex" will be over us on the 15th calling for snow/rain and looks like high winds too:idea: . Hunt hard, stay warm, stay put, and put the big smack down on a big one;) .
