Arrowed a nice eight point last night at 5:30 PM. No blood and raining, my worst nightmare.Looked all night and finally found him this morning at about 8AM. Body was still warm though in the 40's. Though a double lunger, he went over 300 yards.
Gutted him, removed the anus etc and careful not to puncture anything. Still noticed a strong fecal smell. Got him home about 10AM and hosed out the cavity. Still a strong smell. Can i trust this meat to be OK? This is my first deer among many that I haven't field dressed immediately. Any rule of thumb anyone knows of? The temp here is still in the 40's as he hangs. What can i do? Thanks for any wisdom.

You're probably smelling his tarsal glands.

The meat will be fine. Now you have it gutted and cooled down, get it cut up and in the freezer!

I think he'll be fine too. Well done. Tell us how you found him.

:D As long as you found the right deer, it is absolutely fine.

The meat will be eatable but will have an off smell and will be real red in color when you skin it. I skin a lot of them each year and can tell you every deer the guts were left in overnight.

the tarsals work great this time of year for big bucks
