On the opening morning of the firearms season, I was enjoying the crisp quiet morning imensely until some bozo in a single engine airplane decided to start buzzing us. He came in at tree top level and continued this going from me to my dad and on to my friend sitting on the edge of a hay marsh, for almost 45 min.
At one point he came in at a very steep dive right at my friend and I thought he was going to crash right into him.
I was wondering if you know of any activities by the DNR in Mackinaw Co. if they do patroling by airplane or not.
I tried to get an ID if the plane with my binoculars, but with all the tree cover I couldnt get a good view of the tail numbers.
The only thing I could tell you is that it was all wight or very light colored and appeared to be a Cesna type aircraft.

I would strongly suspect that the DNR did not have a plane up on opening morning although I can't say positively for that county. If you wanted to find out positively, call District 4 talk to Lt. Dan Polzien, he would tell you if Law Division had a plane up. You could e-mail him to, his e-mail address is on the DNR web page.

Trout, assuming this is all in jest, Well let's see. The plane would be doing about 100 miles an hour, or about 147 feet per second. A high powered bullet would be doing around 2800 fps, or about 19 times the speed of the airplane (you math majors check my calculations). If the plane were buzzing the treetops, let's assume it was no farther than 200 feet in the air. This means that holding the crosshairs on the point of the pilot's nose should give you a direct hit in the head. Of course this is risky and I would probably aim for the motor to give you an oil trail to follow in case the plane doesn't fall at the shot.

Trout, you've got it good if you are only dealing with planes. Our cabin is 8 miles from the national guard bombing field, as well as in the direct path for the training jets. Takes away from the hunting experience when you are out hunting pats and a jet goes supersonic above your head. Good thing I wasn't old enough to be in 'Nam or I would be having flash backs. Maybe a load of your magnum goose loads bouncing of the windshield will get their attention (just kidding).

Sportsmaster, I understand where your coming from. However, If you ever saw the old WWII movies when the Zeros where straifing the planes parked at airfields, you would know what was happening above me on opening morning.
I would never even counsider shooting at a plane, or anything else for that matter, but I was very tempted to start heaving sugar beats up in the air at the jerk. :p

Boehr, thanks for the info. of the CO. in that area. I will try and contact him.

msiebers: When people even joke about putting a bullet in some ones head that not a joking matter as far as i am concerned. 338bar went into detail on how to do it. If people think thats funny then i guess i am in the wrong forum.

Mio area. WE had a small plane during hunting as well. Did not think much of it until i saw this post. There is a small airport near by but this was way to low, and LOUD!It lasted it about 2-4 min's.I have no idea what it looked like/color or numbers on it as we were in the thick woods.just thought i would throw that out.

hey guys,
As a pilot, I can tell you with certainty the FAA requires us to keep a 500 ft. distance from the ground and other objects over "non-congested" areas which also include open bodies of water. If you think those planes are busting that altitude, you would need to get the tail number of the plane to report them. If they ARE busting the altitude, I would recommend you do report them. There is no safe reason for the average pilot to be buzzing people lower than 500 ft and even if you end up not being able to prove the person was there, they might think twice about doing it again since you can lose your license for doing something as stupid as that. It is incredibly dangerous and I have seen and heard of accidents that have happened because of buzzing, even by more experienced pilots. Plus, if it is anti's doing this, it will be one more win for the hunter.

Markfaz,
The plane I saw was definately below 500 feet and was probably close to only 100 feet or less over the tree tops.
I have already heard back from Lt. Polzien of the Newberry post and he told me right off it the "burdon of proof" will be pretty great in this stiation. At least he is aware of what occured and will be watching for it in the future. I'm sure, since this yahoo got away with it this time, he will attempt it again.
