Here's a letter I sent to NTWF last night:
As you know, Proposal 3 appears to have been defeated by the voters of
Michigan. The anti's have won this battle. Now I'm sure they're
looking at winning the war.

The fact that the Dept. of Natural Resources does not have total
control over the entire scope of Michigan's wildlife is considered a major
obsticle. We need to change that.

The proposal was defeated but perhaps there's something WE can do to
prevent another catastrophe in the near future. Perhaps WE could start a
signature campaign to have a proposal put on the next ballot that will give the
MDNR control of wildlife issues (and not the Legislative Branch as is the
case with the mourning dove).

Is there someone at the NWTF that can help us construct the proper
letter with exact wording that we can use in a signature drive?

We need help. We've taken the first step down a very slippery slope
and I, for one, refuse to sit around and do nothing.

Thank you for you help.
John

AND HERE'S THEIR RESPONSE:
John,

Thank you for your interest in the dove issue. We, too, were
disappointed in the result, though, we were well aware the antis had overwhelmingly
outspent the sportsmen's campaign.

Regarding your question on what we do next, I'd like to turn that
question to Rob Sexton at the US Sportsmen's Alliance for his consideration.
USSA is an organization that NWTF strongly supports because their specialty is
governmental affairs such as this. We have partnered on many campaigns
on behalf of hunting and in fact USSA was very active in coordinating the
coalition that worked to reclaim dove hunting in Michigan. Our state
NWTF chapter also contributed financially to that effort.

I definitely want us to do something, however, I want to make sure our
next steps are purposeful and effective.

Thank you,

Tammy

I was thinking about doing the exact same thing this morning while on the way to work...I just hadn't done the research yet to see how to accomplish it. Way to get the ball rolling!!!

I plan on sending the same thing to DU, PF, the various sportman's clubs, the local tv shows, OLN, ESPN, and so on.

Good luck with DU, and remember who owns ESPN.

The NWTF and PF were good groups to start with. This is something that I have been spouting about for quite awhile now. The power to manage the states' wildlife belongs with the professionals.

DU will send you to USSA as well. They will also not contribute any money to the fight as they are a CONSERVATION organization, not a hunting RIGHTS organization. But just so you all know, DU was THE major player in getting USSA off the ground and into the spotlight several years ago. If it wasn't for DU, there wound not be a USSA.

There are several reasons why DU won't and can't contribute to such issues. Many of their matching funds have limitations on what the organization can do. In addition, they have to put a very high percentage of the monies back into the ground. Remember, DU puts the largest percantage of money back into habitat than any other CONSERVATION organization.
