What is a good digital cam with a good zoom at a reasonable price? There have been many times this season that I with I had a cam on stand with me. Any suggestions?

Depends on how much daylight you have to use.

In low light you will be disappointed unless you get a full sized zoom lens, relatively big and heavy. You need the large objective lens to gather enough light, especially at full zoom. These cameras are close in size to a 'regular' 35mm camera.

In good light I have a pocket sized Sony that takes amazing quality pictures given its size [about a deck of playing cards.]

FYI - 'Digital zooms' are not optical zoom lenses, they just crop the frame and enlarge the remaining pixels at the cost of resolution and picture quality.

My philosophy is that I won't take the camera into the woods or boat if it is too big and heavy, I use the small Sony for field trips and save the larger one for home and indoor outings.

We have always been vary happy with the Sony digital cameras, even a really good one is quite affordable nowadays.
