I use them for pike spearing
if you are useing them for perch buy perch color jigs
take the trebel hook off and use a dropper rig 2-4'' long with your favorate grub on the hook
also bait the nose of the jig so it looks like its running away with somthing good to eat:D

i catch alot of perch on the silver and the blue colored ones in the smallest they have. no need to modify em... the only reason these guys dont catch anything is cuz all they have in their holes are dinks. tip w/ a red jenssen egg on the treb:D
I'm with ya Neil on the jensen eggs, they seem to always work a little magic!!

for perch you can go all the way up to a w5 when they are aggressive ive pulled some slobs on a 7 jigging for walleye though usually you can find me with a 3 sometimes a two the secret is to match the forage.Their are a million techniques you have to acomadate youre own or will i should say try every style but rember unless suspended conditions exist perch are close to the bottom!also i hardly ever use bait on them but when i do it is usually a jenson egg of the red!

do you guys know where i could buy a pack of the jensen eggs? (or look at on a website?) ive never heard of them before. or is this something like a red bead that i could buy at a craft store? you just put one on one of the treble hooks? if anyone could explain further i would really appreciate it. i have had similar results as neil duffey as far as colors and sizes. except i have always tipped with a minnow head.

jennsen eggs can be found at any mom and pop shop. its a small jar and they are in anis oil for scent. the come in little strings of 10 or 15 and ya break one off as needed. kinda looks like beads for the rear end:lol: thats what we call em:lol:

and oh yeah, to answer the original question, i use either a size 2 or size 3 and I too like the chrome and blue but also like the firetiger sometimes or the black and gold.
i only really use em on early ice though... then my jiggy rap bite dwindles.

Don't know why this works. Here is what I do. Jig with the egg on, when the bite slows down, take the egg off and jig the lure bare. For whatever reason they seem to come back. They say perch are curious fish, so maybe they see something different and decide to check it out. ??????????????????????

. . . sizes of jigging Rapalas, but I think you would do a lot better with any color of Swedish Pimple in the two smallest sizes. I've fished for perch my entire life, in both the Great Lakes and inland lakes and even when I've found the fish finicky, and only receptive to tiny teardrops and wax worms, I've still managed to catch them on a Swedish Pimple baited with a perch eye or a half a minnow.
You do have to replace the treble hook with the single hook that's provided (or one of your choosing). Changing the hook increases the hooking percentage and actually helps the action.
I know that Rapala lures have their fans, but with 25 years of experience under my belt, I can assure you that you will not be dissapointed in the results you achieve with Swedish Pimples (and I don't work for Bay DeNoc Lure Co.!).
They may not look like much, but Swedish Pimples seem to work like magic through the ice -- I can't explain it.
PM me if you need more advice or techniques.

bass bug is right, but i dont care who you are or how long u been fishing, you cant help what the fish like tomorrow vs. today. i have 20 diffrent pimples in 2 sizes and 10 diffrent colors... and i have 4 jig raps in the smallest size in 3 colors. iv caught a bunch of fish on both and i love them both... if i could pick only two lures to use in a season itd be those two for sure.:D

and I didn't mean to suggest that Rapala's weren't effective or that they were anything less than the best ice fishing lure someone might use.
However, Swedish Pimples, in the smallest sizes -- in the silver, gold, copper, pearl, chartreause, and bronze colors -- can be extremely effective.
I guess I might use a Rapala lure on one rod and a Swedish Pimple on the other.
PMW
p.s.
Nah, all things considered, I would use a Swedish Pimpel on all rods.

For perch on lake St. Clair I've done good with one size up from the smallest jigging rap. I use glow, blue/silver, or fire tiger. I usualy put a minnow head or a perch eye on the treble. As for working the bait some times the fish want it jigged fast and hard and other times light with long pauses. I've I had better luck with raps in cloudy or dirty water compaired to clear. The best way to learn how to use the raps is find fish and once you know thier there give it a try and experiment.

If there is any GOTO lure in my box for Perch, it would be the Jigging Rap. I use them exclusivly when I ice fish. Years ago, I would go out on the ice and have my minnows in tow, and after putting on a couple in the cold air, I said to myself theres got to be a better way.
In talking to Brian at Selfrigde Bait, he told me that all he uses, he kinda sold me on it. And I didnt have anything to lose. So the next few times out, I would not buy any bait ( to fall back on) and use Raps or spoons exclusively. And after a while, you start catching them, and you start to develope a technique that works for you, and for the fish.
As far as my favorite sizes and colors, I have them as small as #2 and as big as #7's and caught Perch on all of them. Someone told me a long time ago, the bigger the bait, the bigger the fish. Sometimes thats not the case, Ive had a #5 on and caught perch that where dinks, but most of the time there nice. Your not going to get the Quantities, but you will get the Qualtity fish.
Favorite all time color is Rainbow trout. But do well on Perch, black/Silver, Blue/ Silver, Clown, Chartruse, and Houghon Laker Favorite, Orange/Gold. Just talking about it, makes me want to be on SIMCOE jigging in 20 fow and smashing SLOBS on a #5 Rap.
I never take off the treble, in fact, if anything, I change to a bigger treble then whats on the bait out of the package. ALWAYS tip with a Jensen Egg, Red being my favorite color. I do have them in every color they make though , Chartruse, Pink, Blue, White, Green, etc. But seem to do the best on Red. Now, if that doesnt work, I start pulling the eyes out of the perch i caught. Dont know why these work so well, but they do. And they are very rugged, and last for several fish, before you have to put another one on.
Im not a rep for Rapala, but if they need one, I can send a Resume anytime;)
Keep on trying them, Hope you will love them as much as I.....

Up north for crappie and walleye my 3 go to colors are #1. Firetiger #2 Clown #3 Orange and gold......I like them in either size #3 or #5......about 5 yrs, back all we used were #7's.......but something changed the fish's minds and now they prefer the smaller baits!

hello, i found that if you take off the hook in the underneath of the jigging rap and replace it with a small stinger hook you will lose less fish and the color and size all depends also at early morning try glow ones also effective cabelas has a kit works very well hope i helped

I usually fish perch on LSC or Lake Simcoe. Most of the dozen or so old guys I fish with use size 3 Raps. At Simcoe the Rainbow trout pattern is very effective as it is common forage in that lake. On LSC in dirty water I use Chartreuse and chrome, firetiger and black and gold. I remove the treble hook and snap on one of the Hali dropper hooks with a red anise soft bead on the hook. Sometimes if I'm really desparate and take minnows with me I'll pinch off a head and use it. We always have fish in the freezer.
