My pond was more than halfway froze over already. Last year it took til after thanksgiving. The way the temps are going we should have safe ice before christmas easily. Start praying to the ice gods.

Hey fellas.....I'm praying for it too! Stupid forecast calls for some mid 40's ~ 50's later this coming week. That had better be the last of that stuff or I'm gonna ring the weatherman's bell!

Bring the cold - and keep the cold!

Our ice is late this year... could be because my mother-in-law and I have been staring at it for the last couple of weeks and have been melting it with our expectant stares. I was fishing through ice thick enough to support my Honda by Halloween last year. At least there hasn't been a crazy fall storm this year that piled our ice five feet high on the beach.

Last friday I broke both trailer lights backin the boat into go duck hunting and figured it wouldnt be long until ice fishin. I went out this morning and i didnt even need a coat. I hope it gets really cold soon. Its suppose to be getting down in the low 30's by my house sunday but the evening temps are around 40's-50's. hopfully we get good freeze this year, we dont need Mr.Bluegill goin threw the ice again

I looked through my subsistence log that I kept last year and I had already caught my first fish through the ice by the 29th of October. It is late this year for us, but at least our temps aren't supposed to make it above 20 degrees all this week. People have been running snow machines through town already, but they are jumping the gun a little.

Bluegill..... Didn't try to go out on it. But it is quite a drive to where we were. It took 18 hours straight through to get there. I was north of International Falls, Minnesota.

3 inches of ice just up river from me! Or, so the rumor goes. People are fishing through the ice up here! I'll hopefully be one of them this weekend. Late ice.

We'll see if we can get some fresh smelt and tomcods this weekend. I'll also set a tip up with a little tomcod for bait to see if I can't find a pike or lingcod or two. The good pike fishing is a ways up river and easiest to get to overland once the trail gets snowed in good. That might happen during Christmas break... teaching gets in the way of my subsistence activities. I think my dog is as anxious as the rest of us, he prefers frozen smelt to milk bones.

Okay, so I got skunked on Saturday. My mother-in-law caught two smelt, my little girl caught one, my friend caught three... not enough for a meal between us. As I left the ice, a young kid pulled a three foot long ling cod through the ice. Go figure. I got my revenge by pulling two red fox from my traps later that afternoon though. Ice is thick enough to fish through, ling cod are running at night, smelt are in (Sunday). Now I just have to find some time where I am not working.
