What do you guys recommend for tip up line. I fish mainly for pike ,and have been using the HT braided stuff. I have thought about using mono for walleye. Or should I just use a mono leader?

Or should I just use a mono leader?I have a couple set up both way's I like the durabilty of the braided line. Usually use the braided setups when targeting pike. I attach my leader to the braided line using a barrel swivel, or I'll tie a snap swivel on and use a snelled hook. On my mono set ups (for walleye, pearch, crappie) I still use a leader with either of the two before mentioned leader set ups. Keeps line twist to a minimum. ;)

I never thought about mono for my tipups, i fish mainly for pike because my son (which is 6) likes to pull them in i use the black braided line, i have tried to fish for walleye with my tipups several times, but never had a flag or anything, is this because they can see the line and get a little spooked, i have a mono leader that i use, a good foot or so, i guess i will just have to spool up a tipup with mono and try it out, what pound test do you use to spool it up with.

here is a pic of my son's 32" pike he got last year. he is so proud of it.

Am I crazy or would regular Fireline work on a tipup with say a 4 to 6 foot leader of mono?????

Not sure if Fireline, say 14 lb would work in such cold water and the small tipup reels.................kinks, memory etc.....

I like black braided line for hand fishing. Tried that mono in the cold and ouch !!! Caught a 7.5 lb pike on mono outdoors in the winter and when he took off, ouch, buried a 1/4 inch into a cold numb finger. Won't make that mistake again, braided line slids thru the fingers much easily and you can see the mess on the ice better . Just use a 2-3' mono leader of say 30lb and you'll be fine. Good Fishin, pray for ice !! Mike

Using a mono leader with braided line has worked well for me. I have a lot more flags since I started using that presentation. You have to be more gentle when fighting a pike but you'll have more hook-ups.

How do you all rig up your mono leaders for pike?

I've been using steel leaders the last two years and havent gotten a flag so I gotta change something.

I like to use Gruebod catfish line it's a white braided line #30 test. I tie on a good barrel swivel and a 7-strand wire leader. I like the white line because I can tell which way the line is going when I approach the hole.

Ive used mono leaders before, they sometimes, not often, will chew thru, hate it that it happens at all. I now use what is called braided stainless leader which can be tyed to the hook. Toothy critter is the name of it, very thin, flexable and tyeable, sold at walmart. used last year, great stuff I'm not going to go back to mono for pike . I don't like to lose them and don't like the idea of them swimming around with hardware in their mouth. caught about 30 pike last year, no breakoffs, biggest 37 in.

I use the good ole black tip-up line in 20 or 30lb. Tie on a barrel swivel and then a 2' leader of fireline in either ghost grey or the mossy green color. That depends on the clarity of the lake I'm fishing. Had pike inhale the minnow and still able to yank em up and not break the line.
