I just got back my cape, the guy used probably half the deers hide, removed all the meat except a small piece of the neck and rolled up the hide. He's done a lot of capes and seemes to know what he's doing as far as that goes.
How long can you keep it in the freezer without damaging it?
I have it covered in plastic as best I can..it barely fits in the freezer!
I don't intent on keeping in the freezer for long, but kind of need to get past the holiday's before i shell out any money for the mount.
Will it be OK and how long will it keep there?

Put it in clear plastic and freeze it Dean. Then you'll have a redneck mount. Everytime one of your friends comes over you can pull it out and say..."look what I shot.". I have a few good animals in my redneck taxidermy (aka freezer).
OK, now for some serious answers...cary on.

Double bag the cape and it will last in the freezer for a few years.

is your deer head what your talking about? if it is, from past bad expierence, make sure when putting it in the freezer that you have it in there head up. what happened to me is my husband put mine in the freezer head down and when he finally took it to the taxidermy it was no good because the blood before it was frozen settled in the top of the head and made the hide slide and made it impossible to mount it. that was my first deer too so it goes to say i was a little disappointed :(

Head is up...I don't plan on it being in the freezer more than a couple months at most, just want to get past Christmas with it.

Cripes I can open my chest freezer right now and my son has a fox and coyote from last year both double bagged. I like the quote a redneck mount job. That reminds me to bitch at him this afternoon about them damn things.
We had about 2 or 3 heads from the past few years as we were going to have a head boil for european mounts (skull mount) which you can do and they look great. Just don't do it in the house, that is a smell that can make you sick. Nasty job but very cheap just like me.

double bag it and it will be ok for a couple months, but don't leave it in there too long or your will risk the ears, lips and nose becoming freezer burnt.

pull some of the hide over the face to cover the nose. The nose is the only portion of your mount that can and will get freezer damage. I usually fold the hide from the tail toward the head like folding carpet, then when you are close to the neck pick the entire bundle up and over the nose and leave the entire bundle of hide draped up in the horns protecting the nose.

It can all dry out. Some spots quicker than others.

but moist skin is much easier to clean/tan/taxi than dry skin.
