How about a sticky Mods ?!?!

I know that there has to be some out there. :)

I'll start.

I sat in my stand this morning munchin on Halloween tootsie rolls and wacked the biggest doe I ever killed. Ran 40 yards toward my truck and died at the fields edge.

Saw a gorgous sunrise this morning complete with honkin geese and ducks flying around.

I'll be hosting a first time deer hunter in my camp this gun season !
Always a treat.

Sight in day is comming up ! Always look forward to the bullchit sessions at those. :)

Did I mention I killed the biggest doe of my life this morning ? ;)

The wife has the first 3 days off gun season this year.
My daughter will be in college next year, so this might be her last opening day camp for awhile......

I'm alive and well and all is right with the world because it's
deer season and I'll be in a tree come first light tomorrow.

I've seen sooooooooooo many/too many negative posts on this forum and it only gets worse every year. There's not alot anybody can do about it.
Really a downer.

Does/can anybody remember when deer hunting was fun and looked forward to with giddy expectation, laughter and good natured ribbing ?

When Gramps was the Boss and looked to for advise on where the best place to sit was cause he knew everything there was to know about deer hunting ??

When poachers and tresspassing and headless deer and trash and illegal baitpiles and stands too close to property lines and being told no that we couldn't retrieve a dead deer was looked at with curiosity ? I mean really ? That stuff goes on ?

We need to get this back.
The feeling.
You know.........that feeling ?
The one in our guts that tell us that a good thing is about to happen, a great thing. A once in a year thing. Maybe a once in a lifetime thing if the hunt gods smile on us.

It'd sure be nice...............

Good Post.

I checked my rifles the other day and they were all right where I wanted them.

I'm going to camp in the UP this weekend and the weekend after that I'll be there for a week with my dad, brother and uncle.

About time there is a possitive post going. I only hope to get out soon to contribute a story or 2 but I have my 16 year old daughter in my stands when she finds time.

Congrat's on the doe Tom.

Highlight of my year was taking my little girl hunting for the first time. We sat all weekend and never saw a deer. We still had a riot though. She made me laugh the other day I was talking about hunting again with her for rifle season and she said I should call her "sniper-assassin". Where does she get the arrogance?

Although, I have not spent as much time as I would like in the woods this year, I have already had more sits during bow season this year than the last two years combined. Work as always been in the way, (fall is a busy time) and things are getting crazy again, but I'll still get out a bunch before gun season begins. Haven't let an arrow fly, but the season has been good to me regardless! Looking forward to the next 8 straight weekends including the full Thanksgiving weekend spent up north at deer camp.....deer or no deer, thats hard to beat!! All is good here! ( a mature buck would just be icing.....but I like icing!)

for me this season has been great. work was slow enough to get some time in the woods with my seven year old son. we had our share of shooting but mostly the question and answer sessions were fun. i also harvested my first deer ever with a bow. after 18 years of thinking i could shoot a deer i finally did. now with gun season approaching i can only think of the 10 days i will spend in the U.P. only 9 days till we leave!! i hope everyone can have the type of year i had.

Sunday morning I got to watch a hawk try and open up a can of turkey whoop-*****. He came swooping in out of nowhere, and it was like shaking a Christmas tree with all the Turkeys falling out of there. Scared the crap out of me, but it was pretty neat.

heres one i havent been able to hunt much, building a house takes up a lot of time. but the time ive spent in the stand have been a wonderful get away from it all just enjoying the sunrises and all the wildlife i put out a bait/feed pile for my viewing pleasure and am seldom without some sort of wild critter in front of me just the other morning i had 13 turkeys feeding in front of me for about half an hour along with a couple black and one gray squirrel. ive even seen one of those woody wood pecker birds a pileated woodpecker.along with hundreds of song birds and deer every time ive been out. i cant wait till the next time i get out and enjoy the great natural world god has given us

Sat in a tree stand Holloween night, saw about 25 deer. Best night I have had all season. It was the first time setting in this spot, just put the stand up Sunday afternoon and gave it a day before using it. All most tripped the trigger on a nice doe, if her sister hadn't caught me tring to make the shot I would have had her. Great night in the woods.

When I got out of my stand last weekend I saw a group of Toms in the corn so I thought I would play rambo and stalk them. I stalked through the rows of corn to within 20 yards of a good size TOM. Only one problem, it is not easy to Draw a Bow in Corn rows and be quiet. LOL I should have practiced that. Eventually I did get drawn and My arrow Just missed the Turkey over his back. It was exciting none the less.

I watched a house cat stalk chipmunks for the better part of an hour a few weeks back. Little bugger was relentless but never connected. I swear I hope i am never stalked by a housecat.

I have a very active scrape about 35 yards from my stand. This is new within the last few weeks and is already about 3-ft round. Exciting heck yeah.

There isnt anything i enjoy more than bow season and all the time i get to spend in the woods. Although the spot i hunt isn't ideal (i can see a couple houses and spend more time listening to leaf blowers than watching deer) im still thankful for a spot. Tomorrow afternoon i am heading up to the UP for three days to bowhunt in the north woods where i cant hear cars and hopefully wont see anything but wildlife for three days. Needless to say i am very excited, not only at the prospect of seeing more deer but actually getting out into the backwoods. Rut should be picking up beginning of next week and there are a few snow showers forecasted for this weekend....i love the feeling of anticipation and cant wait to watch the sun rise on that first morning.

This year has been fantastic!:)
It started with drawing a spring turkey permit for my area!(shot a beautiful TOM, 8.5in. beard and 19.5lbs, ROSCOMMON.) I'll be picking it up from the taxi. soon.)

Then I drew a state land anterless permit for Roscommon.
Then my wife drew a state land anterless permit for Roscommon!(unbelievable, I only recieved 2 since 98 when I bought my house) and there were only 1000 offered!!!!;) ;) .

Then I drew a fall Turkey Permit for our private land area in Vanderbilt!

Then I took my son (turned 14 in sept) out for his first firearm youth hunt. We seen deer every setting, but he hesitated on a shot and never harvested a deer. I still have the image of that in my head. I was waiting for the big POWW from the 30-30 marlin, but it never happened. When the deer took off he was disappointed that he did not shoot. I remember his words "DANG IT" , DANG IT" I had the cross hairs on the spot. I replied " did you have a good clear shot". He said "yaa..PERFECT"....I said, if thats the case my grandfather always said ""He who hesitates is lost" make it a learning lesson and that goes for girls too! He said "CAN I STILL HUNT"".... THAT WAS PRICELESS!!:corkysm55

Then I shot a nice doe. (The second shot at a deer with my new bow and the second deer I killed with it! Both ran less than 50 yards)_Man I love the mechanicals!!

Then I slayed the salmon at Tippy Damn.... yum..good smoking

Then I shot my fall turkey................

Now I'm antisipating a first year opener at my house(usually its at the cabin in Vandertucky) with family and a few friends. We have about 6 people maybe 7-8 that will hunt state land around my place, then we will have a wild game feast!!!. Venison,Wild Turkey,Pat,Salmon:fish2: ,Blue Gill:fish: , Pheasant and some fixinins,, homemade mashed potatoes and gravy, and a slew of cooked home-grown veggies,,:coolgleam
I'm a HAPPY MICHIGAN HUNTER;) Oh, And I get to go hunting for a BUCK today!

For me it's all about Family. I love the outdoors and spending time with my family and friends. Not a day goes by that my little brother and I talk about our hunts (he lives in Missouri). I just got back from Iowa setting up stands for the gun opener. I'm going this year but not hunting (got mad at the state for raising prices again!) I'm going to hang around the camp and enjoy the excitement of the hunt through others.

Nothing more refreshing than sitting in a tree and listening to sounds of God's awesome creation. Heading out this afternoon.

This thread is more my speed! Ok, onto the good stuff!

Last night, my best friend and hunting partner, Bucknasty, called me from the stand. He was sitting in a new area, one that we will be in on Opening Day. His choppy speech was indicative of one that has just seen our beloved antlered foe. Through broken words and labored breathing, I was able to decipher that he had just witnessed a decent 8 pt. casing the surrounding area for receptive does. Although he did not present a shot opportunity, the mere possibility of a nice buck in our area was enough to get the blood pumping! Hopefully I will be able to be there when Bucknasty puts his first buck on Camp Brotherhood's sacred buck pole!

Less than two weeks to go!!!:woohoo1:

Word on that P.Hunter. The bruiser I spoke of was a very good 8pt, very good body. He got about 70+ yards and turned away toward some does that were West end of the property. I hit some doe bleets and grunts but got nothing. He was in cruising mode for sure.

As I watched him pick his away from me, I asked him if he wanted party next week, I'd bring my friend and he could bring his friend and we could do this.

I'm a rookie bow hunter. Haven't shot one yet,
but I've learned a TON about deer this year.
I've seen a bunch of does, and a couple nice bucks.
( Shot at a 9 pt, and missed).

I'm looking forward to firearm season, hunting w/
my 3 favorite men in the world. My hubby( Brian ),
my dad & my brother. Just the comradery of
hunting is awesome.
One of us getting a big one is just icing on the cake.
I'd LOVE to see my dad get a big one this year.
He's 62 now & 80% disabled, so I'm not sure
how much longer he's going to be able to hunt.

Good luck guys, & be safe.

Well hunting has been great this year thus far. Havent harvested anything yet but boy its been very interesting with all the deer movement. Today I saw 5 different buck 3 being at least 2.5. Had one very cool spike come in under my stand looking for that grunting doe in the tree:evil:. He had some very interesting spikes. They were about 6 inches tall and looked like a butter knife. Have been getting alot of hunting time in with my brother in law this year witch is very cool since he was the one that got me really into the hunt. Lifes great!!!!!!!!!

(Thunderhead's) Saturday Evening Post. I think that should be the title of a weekly, feel-good thread.

I hit the woods this morning (extremely late cuz I didn't hear the two alarms nor the automatic coffee brewer).
It was a beautiful morning. Didn't see anything but it's great just getting out there. I hunt CF land that has a limited deer population but it's great looking terrain and I like going there.

Looking forward to deer camp with my son and a few buddies I played ball with. Can't wait!

Good Stuff 2006:

Spring: Shot my first turkey(10 inch beard, 21#).
Summer: Countless walleye's and pike.
September: Helped my little brother take his first deer on his first hunt(doe).
October: Scored on a decent seven point, seen alot more.
November: here comes the rut! Can't wait to get up to Hale for the opener with Gramp's. It's the greatest place to be on a cold November morning.

oh yeah
November: Just found out my wife is having my second son. Another hunting buddy.:)

Good stuff, thanks for starting it Thunderhead.

Great season so far. Hit a doe on opening morning due to a stupid, terrible, disgusting shot - very bad. Saw her 5 days later doing just fine - great relief (flesh/muscle wound in brisket area and I'm still after her.) Got a 5 point last week. Took Friday off work and sat dark-to-dark in a new stand on state land. There was a light snow cover in Washtenaw County - beautiful. Saw a doe walk right along the top of the ridge and it was like out of a huntin' show it was so pretty. Never would have seen her w/out the snow. Even with cold, frozen, crunchy leaves a small buck got within 30 yards before I heard it. Amazing. Earlier in the season I saw a hawk pounce on a chipmunk. Headin' out right now to a small chunk of private land for the first real hunt on it. John-Ypsi

Great thread, very nice change of pace.

I have had a normal season, I hunt a lot and see very little.

I have see 3 deer all season, until tonight, by sunset I had seen 10 deer.

Finally after over 10 years of bow hunting, I finally shot an arrow at a deer, 20 yards, double lung, went about 60 yards, and dropped in sight. FINALLY! I was beginning to question my sanity... well still am, but you know!

I thought I was shooting a mother doe. Three came in and one was much larger than the others. It turned out not to be a doe, but a button buck. Oh well, I am happy with it. And would take the shot again if offered.

I used a Parker Buck Hunter, Gold tip arrows and a good old 2 blade Magnus broadhead. Worked like a charm and no worries about opening on impact ;) :p)

I gotta get to bed, but will post a picture tomorrow night

Happy hunting!

Good thread. And a dandy year for me.

Spring: A mess of brooks, browns, and lake erie walleye.

Summer: Traveled and chased smallies and large mouth bass.

Fall: Still buckless....but I have saw more bucks than ever! So much action out there right now it's all I think about. Hunted Leelanau county last weekend and couldn't believe how much better it looks this year. 1 8pt, 2 6's, 2 4's and 1 spike along with 12 does
A porcupine chewed my blind up like a wood chipper this summer though. He decided to pay me visit. I thought a squirrel was horsing around climbing my blind. When he finally got up and tried to crawl in I see
that he is the size of a sherman tank! Biggest one I have ever seen and he scared the color off me.

:) :) :) I like this post. I've been stressing over the other stuff lately and this one is really nice. I've got so many interesting stories to tell from hunting that I can't even begin to start to tell them all. Awesome memories though. I'm actually getting really excited about this weekend. I'm going down to my friend's uncle's property in Kentucky to go deer hunting. I've never been down there to hunt and I get to see a friend that I haven't seen in 2 years. (Live's 3,000 miles away.) I just found out I was invited a few weeks ago and I'm GEEKED!! I have a funny feeling this is going to be a hunt to remember. I'm definitely going to take alot of photo's I'll probably post some up too.

Tuesday I'm heading to camp at our cabin in Houghton County to hunt through next Sunday. My brother will be up from Flint area, and we'll be joined by my son and his buddy who are both seniors in high school. Everyone is sighted in and locked, cocked and ready to rock. There's lots of deer sign around so we hope to knock a few down. Good food, cold drink, warm cabin, nightly poker game while listening to the Deer Hunter's Roundup on the radio - what in this world could be gooder? :)

Great year for me so far and I haven't fired a shot. My 15 year old shot his first buck (4pt) and first deer with a bow. I'm really looking forward to gun season because my 14 year old daughter will be hunting with me for the first time. We have a stand set up that we can share. She helped me clear lanes and get it ready. Took both kids to Gander Mountain the other night. Not for anything major we needed but jsut browsing around for a few odds and ends is a fun part of it. Guns are all sighted in. Gear is packed. Oh, and tomorrow is my last day of work until the 27th:D

I agree, this post is a breath of fresh air!

I AM ORIGINALLY FROM Clio, but now live in West Virginia.

Got a couple of does in the freezer from this fall season.

I dropped my son off this morning at a stand I placed on cemetary land. A guy from our church owns his own vault service and got us permission . I then drove to my stand at a different location. I saw the twins I have been seeing every time I hunt there...a doe and button buck. Conspicuously absent was mamma deer. I believe she must have a hot date. ( Things are starting to smoke here too)
Both fawns found my mock scrape and scent trail fascinating. They sniffed and sniffed for a good half hour. The other day I had a decoy out and they obsessed about that for about the same amount of time. But they never got closer than 30 yards from it.

Well, they were the only deer I saw. I went to pick up my son. He was lying at the base of the tree that the stand was in. I freaked for a second, but he looked too comfortable to have fallen. He was asleep. I knew that meant he had scored. He had shot a 6 pt/ 4x2. His best deer by bow.
That made it a great day for me...to see him do that!

I get to come up to Michigan to hunt with my dad and uncle the second week of your season. This will be the first time I have hunted Michigan for 28 years! I can't wait. I have never killed a deer in Michigan.

We will be hunting a couple of days in Farwell and then the remainder near Omer where my parents now live. Again I can't wait. LET IT SNOW!

These are good things .

Boy oh boy is Tom right on! Especially this: "Does/can anybody remember when deer hunting was fun and looked forward to with giddy expectation, laughter and good natured ribbing?" Now that's what hunting season is all about! Then we go out and get the bucks!

And RustyAx, that picture with the tent and snow surely brought back some happy memories.

Things just keep getting better and better. Harvested a nice doe last night. It was a confidence builder for me, first one since I was forced to start using a crossbow 3 years ago. I was real leary of using that thing, wanted my compound back but that was not an option.Seeing lots of bucks this year, not sure what's up with that but not complaining. The improvemnts I have done so far on my property have been paying off. Timbered off 51 trees 4 years ago, 2 years ago had a guy come in and plant the 2 small feilds to corn and it has improved the deer activity 10 fold at lest and it's only 7 acres. It's been a great year so far, harvested my first tom (9 inch beard) off this same land this spring. Things are only going to get better.

Now the sun was higher and the animals were waking up. Tiny finches flew here and there. I was amazed when one landed not a foot away from me and cocked its head staring at me from its right eye. More squirrels had joined in the hunt for acorns long buried. I wondered how was it that tiny white moths could still be around in the cold. It seemed to me they should be hiding somewhere where they could stay warm.
I spent some time checking out the deer blind Grandpa had built for us. The old dead trees were carefully woven for support and to hide us in the woods. I wondered how well we were hidden when I heard, “SNAP!”
I sat frozen on the plastic bucket. Grandpa never moved. He just sat and listened. We waited for what seemed like hours when we heard “swoosh…swoosh…swoosh” and again very loud “SNAP!” I wasn’t shivering any more. My heart was coming out of my throat. Out of the corner of my eye I saw something brown move. I knew this wasn’t a squirrel.
Slowly, carefully I turned to see three deer coming near.

Hunted with a close friend who is a quadraplelegic. I have finally got him back out there after his unfortunate accident which has left him this condition. Bernie has to use a cross bow, which he has gotten quite good with.

Well Bernie took one of the biggest does I have seen in a long time ,which was the icing on the cake. I could not be happier for him as he truly is an outdoor man who lives for fishing and hunting.

Great job Bern, heres to this year and as many more that the good lord sees fit to give us!:)

I took the first three weeks of November off, I was lucky enough to harvest a 6pt on the 3rd, a 12pt. on the 5th, and on the 8th I filled my
fall turkey tag with a white/grey hen. The hen and 12pt will be mounted.
I had a awesome November!! But the best and most memorable time I had this fall was taking my two boys 4 and 7 out squirrell hunting, and they each sat 4 times with me deer hunting. The times spent afield with my two boys are priceless!!!!!!!
