I have not done any type of spearing and would like to try it out this winter. Fairly new to the hard water fishing although I have a nice 3 person shappell elite shanty...
What and where should I look for in a basic (affordable) spear?
Anyone got one they would sell?

heavy is good i like the old forged antique type if you can find one at a garage sale ..if you would bend a tine u can bend them back without breaking..... if you have to buy a new one wider is better... and a chain saw is nice if you have one for cutting a large hole...ive used large trolling spoons instead of decoys too works well... zx10 has a good point spear handles can be hell on a portable and you need a large hole 3 ft by 3ft or so

you might want to build a spearing shanty.

I thought of that and I might make one to leave at the in laws lake, I wanted to be mobile, as you can see in the name I am up to Black Lake Cheboygan often in the winter. I will have to see how large the holes are in my portable.
I am still looking for a spear if anyone has any leads.

I have a shappell 3000 that part of the floor is cut out of, I intended to use it for spearing, just never got around to it. If you're interested in it I probably can also find one of our spears to go with it, shoot me a pm and we can talk turkey, er... uh pike spearing!

I also fish black lake. You will want a nice large hole, and I also cut mine with a chain saw and then use a spud to push the cut out ice under the hole and away.
