Ok folks need a little advice.
I am tired of dragging my big heavy Frabill all over the ice. I am seeing for this year that there are quite a few of these pop up type shanties. They are along the lines of the pop up deer blind. Has anyone used one and if so how well do they work for keeping the cold air from sweeping under them? How do they hold up on windy days?
Lets hear all about them,

Pak Shack - $99 - folding chair with the shanty that flips up over the top. Looks pretty slick for the money. Looks like its only for one person but something to consider if you ice fish alot on your own.

i dont know, i would think on the days you actually need shelter would be the days that those featherweight shanties would fail you.
if you notice in the video, that it is a clear, windless day when they are using them. i was watching that thinking how crazy it would be in one of those on a real cold windy day. i bet it would not be fun.
plus that super light, little black sled....that thing would get blown across the lake as soon as you let it go.

An achoring system I use is to drill some holes outside of the shanty with a small auger.Tie down some 2lb weights around each corner of the shanty and drop down the holes you drilled. You could use additional weights on the side if needed. These weights that I use are triangle sinker weights that us fisherman use on the st clair river off the wall.(Sorry Mike C no pun intended)You could probaly use some kind of round dowels tied down to the shanty also by dropping them in the holes you have drilled and then turning them sideways till the are laying flat underneath the ice.Pull up snug then tie them off and that should hold you in place pretty well.

You know i have seen and heard a lot of things about how to tie your shanty down so it don't fly away, but one thing i haven't heard yet, which is what i do,
is this.
setup my shanty with the back facing the wind, and then once i get the holes drilled, I then take my pull rope and stretch it out and then take my power auger and drill a hole back far enough so the pull rope is tight, then just simply put my auger in the half of a hole that i drilled and i have never had a problem so far.

I read a thread either last year or the year before where a guy used his cordless drill with a 3/8's bit and drilled in some eye bolts for tie-downs. Don't see why that wouldn't work, as long as you don't drill all the way through the ice.

Save your money. Buy an Otter or a Clam. I can't tell ya how many shanties like that, that I've either throw or seen in garbage cans.

The wind blows under the bottom of portable blinds and they are a PITA in general. Save your money and buy a Fish Trap Pro.

I use a shappel rover 2 thats a little tough to set up alone on a windy day but it is awesome esp. considering the price. I hear the rover 1.5 is great, lots of room , easy to pull, and inexpensive! Got mine at Franks and saved big!

i bought a clam 2000 last year and it works good for me it pulls very easy and weighs like 32 lbs fits 2 people and kwik setup blocks the wind nice, and i usually just use my lantern for heat on low seting works really well.prob anchor it a few days this year chased it acrossed croton pond last winter about 300 yards in 25 mph winds but it did stay upright.
