View Full Version : Twisting cables good or bad?

A while back at my pro shop I was told twisting the cables on your bow to gain a few extra pounds of draw weight wouldn't affect performance other than gaining speed and kinetic energy. In a prevoius thread GVDocHoliday said I may have lost a little something by doing so. What is everyones opinion? I shoot a 2006 Mathews Prestige set at 76 lbs. I have a 28" draw and shoot a 490 grain cx Terminator Hunter Select at 279 fps. This gives me about 79.5 lbs of kinetic energy for my big game setup. Could I generate more kinetic energy with a different arrow (I prefer something on the heavy side as this is my moose, elk, caribou setup) or by untwisting the cables and dropping poundage to hit a better sweet spot in the cam?

Twisting or untwisting will not effect the tuneability of the bow or the ability to get it tuned. There is a point however where if you go too far you're basically taking one step forward and two steps back. All bows have a sweet spot range were they give the best performance...all you have to do is play with it to find it. A 6lb jump requires aloooooot of twists in the cable. To balance it out, put some twists in the string as well.

think of it this way. when you are twisting the cables, you are pretty much bring the limbs in towards eachother. if you do this, the string does not have as much tension on it. then the string is slacking. now if you do like what doc said, adding twists to the cables and the strings will gain you some performance.
CAUTION: be careful on how much you tweak your bow. i would not make your bow any higher poundage than it is now. 70 pound limbs at 80 pounds is not usually a good idea. so be careful.
