How do you guys feel about the ACTUAL safety of the low oxygen shutoff feature of these heaters? Was thinking about trying to maybe get into some camping this winter on the ice and was a little concerned about the actuality of using this heater in my shanty while sleeping.

when I have the heater and lantern both going I have to leave the door on the shanty unzipped some or the heater will turn itself off because of the lantern fumes, always a good idea to leave some source of fresh air.

........always a good idea to leave some source of fresh air.A very, very good suggestion!
If your going to be sleeping in the shanty I'd even go so far as to recommend a battery operated CO detector. You can hang it in the shanty. Better safe than sorry! :help:
I'd much rather read a fishing report from you than about you! :yikes: ;)

About five years ago i hunted deer at a ex-fathers in laws property. (Wasn't at the time) I woke cause it was freezing plus with a pounding headache and was real nausious, dizzy: etc. Keep it vented. I had a window open and was using a buddy heater. I think it was the begining of CO2 poisioning. Maybe not. Not sure if you are talking of camping in a big ole permant shack, but if you are my bud uses a CO2 detecter in his shanty that sleeps 4. My grandparents were lucky enough to have neighbors stop by back in the early 40's and both were unconcious from CO2 fumes, I should of figured not to make the same mistake. Genetics...LOL. If there was a recall on a shutoff feature, enough said. I know there have been some on the big buddy, but dont rember what for.
PS- I had the heater on top of two stacked metal milkcrate, so that it was about two foot above were I was bunked. Not sure if that made a differance.

I disabled this feature. mainly because I am in a portable shanty and the wind keeps blowing the flame out. Now the heater element actually relites the pilot. I think if i were in a permanent shanty I wouldn't have to. their is a manufacturer that has one advertised in cabelas that has a hot air blower and pipes it in dryer vent hose giving no CO2. it runs off propane and a 12 volt battery. probably your best bet for sleeping with the heater on. all the fumes are outside.

If your going to sleep with your heater on just make sure before you fall asleep that you write your full name in ink on your forehead so they can ID you easily.

I've been using mine for 2 years now. No problems.
14" camper. I also have a CO detector installed just in case and always leave a small window open.

Had the exact thing happen to me. Only we didn't have a heater going. Just think it was the beer & pickeled eggs.

Those heaters are awesome. me and a friend went on a 4 day and night ice fishing trip 2 years ago, and slept in my clam 5600 4 man shanty. The shanty was big enought to put 2 cots in it and there was about 1 foot in between the cots. just enough so your cot wasn't touching the other one. we slept one night at hubbard lake, one night at houghton, one on van etten lake one night at boat ramp at saginaw river. We fished 12 hours a day in the shanty, and slept in it at night time. there was no room on the floor of the shanty for the heater so we had to hang it around the poles on the shanty. on low it would last about 5-6 hours. at night it got down to 0 degrees plus wind chill, so it was too cold out to vent the shanty. woke up everymorning, obviously. it was so cold out I still had to sleep with coat, hooded sweatshirt, skull cap, thermal socks,o degree sleeping bag, and still woke up cold. From the heat on the inside and cold on the outside, the walls of the shanty were solid ice when we woke up, it was crazy. We fished and slept in that shanty straight 4 days, it was definately the shanty of skank! by the end of the trip. One cool thing to is you can bring soup, beefstew, anything in a can, and cook it on the heater. crack the lid with can opener for vent, place on top of the heater by the black grate, give it 10 minutes its soup time. awesome heaters, durable and you can definately use it while sleeping with no venting, no problem. I have also used in my bedroom when we lost power due to ice storms, used all night no vent, no problem
